MY FAVORITE FANTASY NOVELS
The Night Land by William Hope Hodgson:
Though dreadfully flawed by redundancy and a
false archaic style, this romance is one of the
great stories, set at the end of time when the sun
has died and all earth's millions reside in a
gigantic pyramid, protected from the hideous
evils without. It truly deserves a wider audience.

The Worm Ouroboros by E.R. Eddison: This, too,
is a difficult read, because Eddison wrote in
Shakespearian English. Nonetheless, some of
the scenes are truly unforgettable.

The short stories of Lord Dunsany, particularly
those in the long out of print Ballantine Books
edition Over the Hills and Far Away. Such stories
as Where the Tides Ebb and Flow, The Field, and
The House of the Sphinx demonstrated why
Dunsany was one of the great writers.

The Man Who was Thursday, and The Flying Inn
by G.K Chesterton: I would read anything written
by Chesterton, who was one of the great thinkers
of our century. I cannot explain my fascination
with these books, but I love them.

The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis: Of all Lewis'
fantasies, I consider this the best, being a cross
between his theological and fantasy works.

The Earthsea Trilogy by Ursula LeGuin: I return
to these books year after year, particularly to the
first book, A Wizard of Earthsea. LeGuin is at her
best in this tale of a young boy sent to wizard
school.

The first four books in Roger Zelazny's "Amber"
series, beginning with Nine Princes in Amber.

Just to list a few other favorite works without
comment:

The Last Unicorn by Peter Beagle
Phantastes by George MacDonald
A Voyage to Arcturus by David Lindsay
The King in Yellow by Robert W. Chambers
The Three Imposters by Arthur Machen
