It’s about a writer who, one day, lands a job in an abattoir. He discovers that, as time progresses, his writing begins to get gorier in line with the work that he does. And so he begins work on a novel. But just as he is nearing its completion, he is sacked. The dilemma is; he cannot finish the book unless he is immersed in gore. His attention turns toward those who sacked him and made his life hell in the abattoir. Title: LAST FLIGHT OF THE OWL ISBN 0 9589018 8 0 140 pages Published by Night Hag Productions, 2002. Price: $20 (plus postage) Peter Bird remains as one of Australia's most elusive and obscure writers. Some of his work has appeared in arts journals and he has made rare appearances at folk venues reciting poetry and playing guitar. In the 1980's he self published two poetry booklets The Stone Owl and Old Bone Oracle. They were remarkably unsuccessful. We say remarkable, because, there were passages of great delicacy in much of his work. Critics of his work have labeled it "biting, profound and ironically humorous". Title: A SHEEP CALLED PEPITO ISBN 0-9589018-9-9 406 pages Published by Night Hag Productions, 2002 Price: $20 Forget everything you thought you knew about sheep. It's all going to be wrong. This is the heart warming story of an alien called Pepito who came to earth to warn us all about an impending invasion, and to escape a tyrannical council that plotted to destroy him. Unfortunately, nobody took him seriously. It probably had a lot to do with the fact that he looked so much like a sheep. But in the outback town of Yungaburra, strange things were happening. Sheep were chasing cars and raiding people's garbage bins, and generally doing things sheep had never done before. But, of course, they weren't really sheep. Ray Bender needed a big story for the gazette, and something told him he was going to get it. "Using satire as a vehicle for his self expression, Peter Bird has written a work of extraordinary fiction. This deserves to be regarded as one of the best examples of this genre." SSG review. 2004 Title: THE JEWEL OF ORTH ISBN: 097508920X Pages: 124 Published by Night Hag Productions, 2003 Price: $12 (plus postage) Just as secret agent Bob Craig is about to face the final showdown with his lifelong nemesis, Jason Mortein, two strange objects fall out of the sky. "Greetings," he said. "My name is Peter. I know who you are. You're name is Sisyphus." Sisyphus said: "You can call me Sissy for short. Everybody else does." I asked him where everybody else was. He told me that he killed them all. He said they all made fun of him, so he dropped the boulder on top of their heads. "See that stuff you're standing on? It's mashed heads and bodies." "That's gross." I said, tippy-toeing on my bare feet. "You had better get used to it. You're in hell now, son. You'll find heads and bodies everywhere."A metaphorical, magical discourse into the mind of a wandering and aimless soul.
