Dana Wright doesn't know it, but her personal spiritual development and the fate of the entire world are inextricably linked. It is only through her growth and self-realization, aided by a pod of dolphins and a group of people with whom she has shared many lifetimes, that humanity's enemy can be stopped. EXCERPT from PASSAGES: Screams...he heard screams in the distance. That was the first thing Chris recognized as he fought his way back to consciousness. It was dark, only small shafts of light were filtering in through the rubble that held him and surrounded him. It took him several minutes to remember where he was, and he still didn't know what had happened. He had been standing at a Plexiglas counter, looking at some new type of electronic camera equipment, when he heard a loud "BOOM." A fraction of a second later, the walls around him and the ceiling above him all collapsed inward like a house of cards caught in a sudden breeze. Except for the screams, which were fading now, everything was quiet, intrusively quiet. Chris just lied there, not moving, waiting for his head to clear. When he finally did try to sit up, he found that he couldn't. He was pinned in place by a large chunk of metal and concrete that had once been an integral part of the structure of the shopping mall. He surveyed his body parts individually. Both his legs and his feet appeared to be intact; he could even move them a little. His left arm was aching and immobile. It took a little while before his eyes adjusted and he realized that it was being held in place by some of the debris. His right arm was free and responded to his brain's commands, but his torso was trapped under the large chunk of building that had wedged in between a couple of larger pieces that kept it from coming all the way down and crushing his chest like an over ripe tomato. There was about a quarter inch of clearance between his chest and the restraining rubble. `Dana,' he thought suddenly. `My God, where's Dana? Please let her be all right,' he prayed in silent desperation. The prayer was on his lips when he again slid into unconsciousness. When he came to again, Chris had no idea how much time had passed. If there was any activity around him the sound of it was being soaked up by the debris that trapped and surrounded him on all sides. The darkness and the silence surrounded him like deep water and the lack of sensory input forced his mind into a frenzy of imaginings and fears. After what had to be several hours, Chris was sure he heard voices. They were muffled but near by, and they sounded wonderful to him. "Help! Help me! I'm in here!" he shouted. But he was not heard. The voices belonged to emergency medical personnel searching the wreckage for survivors. They were not far from where Chris lay under the remains of the electronics store, but the debris around him soaked up his calls for help. He shouted again, and again. "You've got to hear me," he yelled to the unseen rescuers. The voices moved off and Chris passed out again. Larrisa was on her way back to the shopping mall when the Enemy commenced their swift attack. She heard the loud "CRACK" as they appeared in the sky and instantly opened fire on everything in sight. Putting down the craft immediately, she got out and ran for cover. As usual, the assault lasted only a few minutes; but when it was over, the devastation was all too evident. An entire shopping center lay in ruins, as did all the surrounding structures and vehicles. She contacted the Association and informed them of the destruction, the length of the attack, the apparent direction of the retreat and all the other details she could remember. She included the fact the Dana and Chris were in the shopping center at the time. That caused some commotion. "Ask Nicole to come here immediately," Jonathan ordered Gunther, who was standing beside him, dumbfounded by Larrisa's report. Gunther snapped to and went to find the requested psychic. He didn't have to search long; she was on her way into Jonathan's laboratory with Stephan and Sethu. Nicole had put but one foot into the lab when Jonathan asked her, a touch of anxiety in his voice, "Can you contact Dana? Is she all right?" "I will try, Jonathan. Right away. I sense that she is all right, though I must make contact with her to make sure." She spun around and headed for the conducive serenity of her own office. When she got there, she lay down on the couch and slipped the Electronic Telepathy Enhancer over her head. The three electrodes fell naturally in place over her temples and the center of her forehead, forward of the pineal gland she usually referred to as her third eye. Nicole knew Dana's vibratory pattern by heart, but the E.T.E. was already set for her anyway. She took several deep breaths, released the tension from her body and focused her thoughts for guided reception. Pain was the overriding sensation as Dana swam slowly back to awareness. Her head felt like it was being slowly crushed in a vice and there was a sharp, stabbing sensation in her right side. She tried to move, but doing so only sent more intense waves of agony through her body. Turning her head slowly from side to side to survey her situation Dana found herself amidst the remnants of the Enemy's destructive attack. Glass, plaster, concrete blocks, wire and twisted metal were all around her. She could barely make out the profile of the body of one of the young girls who worked in the bookshop. It was not moving. Dana was suddenly thankful it was fairly dark around her as she thought she could just see a metal shaft piercing the middle of the girl's youthful body. The movement of her head caused Dana to quickly slip back into unconsciousness.
