One cold windy day he empties his bread sack of crumbs, and the ducks are still hungry. Their feed pan is empty. What could have happened to Mr. Johnson, who usually feeds them? Logan, with help from his Gramma, phones his friends who, with babysitters, Moms and Dads, Grammas and Grampas, feed the ducks every day until Mr. Johnson recovers from the flu. Logan and the Duck Patrol stand ready to feed the ducks anytime Mr. Johnson needs them. Logan feels good because now he knows that although he's too young for lots of things he'd like to do, he is never too young to help people - or ducks. Although the plot is simple, the book communicates subtly at several levels. It celebrates that special bond between grammas and grandchildren. Adults don't tire of reading it over and over. Librarians love it. Awards Before publication, Logan and the Duck Patrol won third place in the America's Best Children's Book 1994 contest sponsored by the Writers Foundation.
