order to meet their celebrity idols from the cast of the "Lord of the Rings" 
film trilogy. They invited the stars to host “fundraising events,” pocketing 
any cash raised, all to bask in the glow of the movie stars’ presence.  By 
the time their train of lies derailed, it had stretched from Switzerland to 
New Zealand, and all points in between.

Renne has presented two highly memorable anti-heroes. Without in any way 
diminishing the reader's natural sympathy for the fraud victims, she 
nevertheless fascinates and amuses with the details of this almost 
unbelievable scam. Amy and Abbey are like villains from a nineteenth-century 
melodrama: charming scoundrels, dazzling mountebanks, an object lesson in 
manic creativity gone awry. 

The book contains photos and interviews from LOTR celebrities Sean Astin, 
John Howe, Kiran Shah, Bruce Hopkins and many others.  Fascinating forensic 
tidbits like forged checks and phony birth certificates (from 
a “fundamentalist Pagan” commune, no less) illustrate firsthand the process 
of faking expense accounts and obtaining false identities.
