Welcome
to Robocat's guestbook! Feel free to leave comments, questions,
complaints, even just "I wuz here"--it's lovely to know who's stopped
by. And thanks for visiting!
18 Oct 2005 note: Spammers seem to have been harvesting eddresses from here, so feel free to post WITHOUT leaving an email address. I'm looking into starting a Marine Boy bulletin board, since folks like to talk about that and related shows and a guestbook is a hard place to have a conversation. Check back here in a few days for the URL. In the meantime, it's great to have a name to go with your comment, but no email address needed! Thanks.

Your site is was a nice finding, as it has great pictures of that TV show from my childhood (which, BTW, I tried to never miss).
Here in my country, it was aired regularly from 1972 till late 1978, and then again briefly in 1980-81.
Greetings from Chile!

I recall watching this cartoon when I am still 5 or six years old. Its nice to see that this old cartoon is still being preserved. I think it will be much better if we could have some clips or even the soundtrack like that of gigantor. Its amazing that as early as those years, Japan's technology was already that far. How I wish we could do the same thing here in the Philippines.

this site brought back many, many stoned yet fond memories for my friend who is too shy to give his real name. Yes! It's a man!!! he loves marine boy, and I have to say that as I watched the pictures I began to remember it too.... great pictures, and a lovely dolphin! P.S. My friend was in love with mermaid features .... and still is... maybe that's why he's never married!

Hi, rishio! That's a very good question. :) :) The Eiden Myr message board would be the perfect place to post it!
Just click on Message Board, to the left, or go to the URL http://www.eidenmyr.com/cgi-bin/cutecast/cutecast.pl.
I love seeing new entries in the guestbook, and when the guest provides an email address I usually drop a line, but conversation is tough in a guestbook format. The message board is a great place for questions and answers and discussion. Please do drop by! No registration required.

Hello All,
Damn good site, does anyone remember PRINCE PLANET?
I am also trying to get a hold of the whole collection of JOHNNY SOKO & HIS FLYING ROBOT.
It's a shame they don't replay these kind of shows on tv instead of the repeatable bullshit played by the tv stations.
Thank god for DVD's & VHS.

I used to watch this when it was run on Saturday morning TV in Ireland, in the late 70's. We had a slide in our back garden that we used to pretend was the launch tube out of the submarine that MB used. Also, we would spend our summers swimming off a local pier and chewing Juicy Fruit, pretending it was Oxy-Gum. Nice to see I'm not the only person to remember it.

Terry,
Iloved your first book, Illumination, because your characters were so real, it was like they were different sides of you that simply put their biographies down on paper while living in your imagination. I haven't the opportunity to go and get your other books (or the money, being a high school student). I am writing my own book. Any pointers?

I actually read "The Binders Road" first. I was looking in the new book section at the library and picked it up. I saw that there was an earlier book called "Illumination" but it wasn't on the shelves in the library. Anyway, I went ahead and read the book. I enjoyed the story so much that when I saw a paperback copy of it in a bookstore, I had to buy it.
Shortly after my purchase, the Science Fiction book club that I belong to had a sale on “Illumination” for around 5 dollars. Of course I bought it and then read both books in the correct order. It certainly filled in the gaps on my knowledge and history of Eiden Myr, plus introduced me to the character, “Liath”. I’m hoping she will be in the next book “Triad” which I can’t wait to read. The first time I read “Binders Road”, I didn’t know who Verlein was speaking to at the end of the book. After reading “Illumination”, I knew who it was.

Terry,
Your books are amazing!!! I did not want to put either one down and when I got to the end....I didn't want it to end...it seems way to long to have to wait for Triads.....
I took the quiz to see what character I was and was surprized to have it be Torrin......
I am fairly new to this genre.....The Lord of the Rings started my adventure.....I am an avid reader....
I hope that your next book tells me more of Liath....your characters come to life.....you have an incredible gift and I thank-you for sharing it.....

Vince,
I remember an episode from when I was 6 years old where 8th man was bound somehow and his belt buckle opened revealing cigarettes which he lit by putting it into the fire of what was trying to consume him. After a couple of drags, he was able to break free. The cigarettes gave him super superpowers.

Because I thought a Binder would be the least fun of a triad when in fact it is the most important, Heff's refusal to be healed while being a binder, binders being the forerunners of healers made me cry. As well as Liath never having made love with him. It took a while to see this.

This is Terry, posting with my admin hat on.
On November 30th, the user Lia posted a lovely guestbook entry about <i>Illumination</i>. Alas, it contained some spoilers, and I couldn't suppress only those parts of the message.
I emailed you, Lia, to thank you for your post. I hope you got my message. Thanks again!
And thanks to everyone else for your wonderful guestbook posts. Since it's a guestbook, I don't usually reply, but I read and appreciate every post. I hope you'll consider dropping by the message board, where we chat about all kinds of stuff. You can get there by clicking on Message Board to the left (if you're in the framed site), or go directly to:

It is great to finally find some information and fans of these obscure 60's afternoon cartoons. I have been looking for info on P Planet, M Boy, and TOBOR(robot reversed) for about 10 years. It would be nice if cartoon network or other began airing these in addition to Gigantor.

I hadn't thought of this cartoon in such a long time. It was the 60's when I started to search the TV dial and found channel 19 WXIX in Cincinnati that I found Marine Boy, Larry Smith and his Puppets (Hattie the Witch) 8th Man, Speed Racer and the likes. I get real mad when I turn
on network TV on Sat morning. The cartoons that are on are pathetic! I realize I'm 43 now, but still would like a better selection than the crap they offer. They just don't make em like they used to.

I've been wanting to get on the internet to find out about old cartoons; and finally, here I am.
I just rescently purchased all Speed Racer episodes, and my kids love it. (3 and 6 years old). I want to get some Marine Boy Episodes because I know my kids will love it as much as I do. Is there a catalogue or some company some where that you can call and purchase old episodes? Thanks from Dean of Newark, Delaware U.S.A.

I can't believe this... somebody else remembers this show. I saw it in 1976 (?) and they repeated in 1997 (fuzzy memory) I think the BBC only bought a few episodes. It was just so imaginative and so well-done, nothing else I have ever seen compares to it.
I can remember all the blank looks I got when I mentioned it, and hummed the theme tune. It was a great shock to hear it again after 25 years!
I think I'm going to have to buy a tape or two just to remind myself of it all.

I used to love Marine Boy as a kid. My mom even sowed me a bean bag boomerang and a holder that I would wear around my arm all around the house. Luckily for me I never broke anything. :-)

I just came across that and I was amazed. I was as a kid a big fan of Marine Boy,Ultraman,Sally Star, Now, has anybody hear of a kids show called "Tobar the Eighth Man". It was about a robot being who could change to look like a normal human man and when he had to fight villians he would change to the robot, Tobar.I do think that is how to spell it. I loved it as a kid as well as Marine boy and the others.I hope you can find "Tobar the Eighth Man

Thank you for being there for me. Yours truely, Jack Freeland

As I was reading everyones comments, I just nodded my head and smiled. There isn't much more that can be said, but I'll try. I'm 35, father of two, I have one of the biggest Ultraman collections on the east coast. One thing that has eluded me over the years is Marine Boy stuff! I'm happy to learn that there was a bigger following for the original aqua-lad. I ask people here and there if they remember this cartoon and they look at me as if they didn't have a childhood without cable! I had 7 channels and managed to watch Ultraman, Space Giants, Johnny Sokko, Marine Boy, Kimba, Hercules, Rocket Robinhood, Johnny Cypher, and Tobar the Eighth Man. Thanx fo' the memories.

Hey, I've been looking for old school anime, and marine boy is one of my favorites. I wander if you ever heard about Triton, is also japanese cartoon, is about a boy, last survivor of Atlantis, is guarded by 3 dolphins, one with glasses, one with a snail shell tied in his back, he has a mermaid as a friend, he can breathe under water, he also has a knife powered by fire or something like that. The worst enemy is the evil God Poseidon, lord of the oceans, he has many informers, the jellyfish, they knock on rocks and send signals like sonar, saying, "Triton is in the west..." for example.
Any info 'bout that one? Please contact me if so.
Thanx.

Thanks, marky and j!
j, there's definitely not much info out there. I haven't seen anything like modelsheets, and that's weird--I mean, you can get an entire set of blueprints for the spaceship from Land of the Giants, but nothing for Marine Boy. There was a model kit for the P1 sub, and John Patterson sent pictures of the box art and instruction sheet (and a Marine Boy model he made using some non-Marine Boy model pieces). They're probably not exactly what you're looking for, but here are the URLs:

Love the images of Marine Boy.
It's my first living memory, being 3 or 4 years old watching it.

I'm sure the show hasn't been aired in the UK since the early 70's

Hi, Marc! Thanks for the note, and for coming to the panels at I-Con.
It can be tough to find things in bookstores, with the short shelf life these days. You'd probably have more luck ordering online. Most of the magazines I've been in should still be available as back issues through the publishers' Web pages, and the anthologies that are still in print (=Blood Muse= is not, but =Sword & Sorceress XVI= is, as are the two Sherlock Holmes pastiche anthologies) are available through Amazon.com. My bibliography page (http://www.sff.net/people/terry_mcgarry/inprint.htm) has links to the Amazon page for each book and to the magazine publishers.
I'm very flattered that you've gone looking for my work! It's tougher with short fiction and poetry, but if all goes well I'll have a novel out next spring, and then I will gleefully be able to point you to "M"s on the bookstore shelf!

Hi Terry
Just a note to say I enjoyed your web site and I have done my best to attend the various panels and discussions that you have been on at the ICON conventions at Stonybrook. I do have a question though, I have not had too much luck in locating your works, are they sold in the usual bookstores? Please advise. Thanks.

Kurt and Phobos, I'm so glad you enjoyed the site! You are absolutely not alone--there are a lot of people who remember Marine Boy fondly and wish there were current video releases. At least now you can prove that if you were hallucinating it was a collective hallucination! :)
Hel, I'd say that making it up for the B&N signing counts as making it to the Nebula Weekend. It was great to see you! (Moseying on over to return the guestbook visit...)

I just want to thank you for taking the time to build this website. Over the past decade I have been trying to convince my wife (who is younger) and friends Marine Boy actually existed.
Up until now it has been me against the world on this topic. My wife is the one who actually found the site and apologized after joking me in front of our friends. Not growing up in N.C.
I was beginning to think the show only aired in VA. This may still be the case, but at least I now have the evidence to share with these non-believers. It had gone as far as me visiting
the local video stores to see if they had something in the database or a way of getting a copy of one of the episodes.
Again, thanks for helping me reminisce about the past.

The Marine Boy Gallery? I love you! I have looked all over the Web for things relating to this series, and I was starting to think I had hallucinated the whole thing. Count Shark was killer! Thanks again and continued success with your site.

Hi, Eva. I do have a poetry collection out--it's called =Imprinting=, and you can order it through Amazon or the Anamnesis Press Web page--but no short-story collection at the moment. I'll certainly let you know when that changes.
Thanks for stopping by!

Hi, I'm a book reviewer for Fantastica Daily at www.mervius.com and I was HOPING you had a volume of YOUR collected works. But, alas, not so. If you ever get one together let us know.

Awesome! Action in the guestbook!
No pub date, yet, Alan, but so far things look good, so fingers crossed that it'll be this year.
