Windows Software Setup Instructions

    mIRC
    Download this software

Setting up mIRC is fairly simple. The first time you start the program after installing, it will ask for your user information. (If you're already using mIRC with other IRC networks, your user information will already be entered.

    1. Enter your name, email address, and the nickname you want others to see in IRC (we'll use "Brunette" in these examples). You can also enter an alternate nickname to use in case someone else is already signed on with your first choice.

      Mirc setup

Note that IRC nicknames must be unique. For example, If you pick "Jim" as your nick, you'll only get to use it if you log on before any of the dozens of other Jims. If both of your nickname choices are in use, IRC won't even let you login. Avoid the problem by picking a short, unique nickname instead (i.e. IRCMaven).

    2. Add the SFF Net IRC server to your list of servers. You do this by clicking on the Add button on the Options screen. (this screen will automatically popup during your first use of the program. If you want to bring it back later, choose File --> Options from the menu.

Fill in the fields on the Add Server screen. Use "SFF Net" for your Description, "irc.sff.net" for your Server and the default port of "6667" will probably work for you. If you're coming from AOL or any other provider who blocks port 6667, use "7777" instead. You don't need to fill in the Group or Password fields.

Reminder - SFF Net IRC is a private server, it is not part of any other IRC network (i.e. Undernet, Dal-net, etc.) If you wish to use any of those networks, you'll need to select a different server when you connect).

Your screen should look like this before you proceed:

      Mirc setup

    3. That's all there is to setting up IRC! However, you'll probably want to review some of the default preferences to be sure certain settings are active to enhance your security against receiving harmful files while in IRC. There are some viruses that spread only in IRC, but most of those require that you have automatic file receiving turned on.

To avoid this (and to enable Flood protection which prevents someone from sending large amounts of text that can overwhelm your reader) use the Category listing on the left side of the Options screen to pull up the following screens. Verify that your settings are set as in the examples:

      Mirc setup

In the IRC --> Flood section, enable Flood Protection.

      Mirc setup

In the General --> Lock section, disable file Gets, and the /run and /dll commands.

      mirc setup

In the DCC section, make sure Show get dialog is selected, and that If Auto-get and file exists is set to "Ask"

      Mirc setup

Finally, In the DCC --> Folders section, be sure that the Ignore file types option is checked.
    You're now ready to chat!

Please see the IRC Quickstart instructions for tips on how to use mIRC in an SFF Net IRC session.
