Even over 4 years of episodes, we never find out much about these characters' backgrounds. This was, after all, in those dark days before Bochco and Cannell hit their strides. But here's what can be gleaned:

| Sgt. Kenneth Hutchinson | David Soul | |
| Born in Minnesota, participated with the Sea Scouts as a boy. Has at
least one sister, but it is not known if parents are still alive. Married and divorced once.
Talented singer, apparently also writes songs. Apparently, he and Starsky became partners not
long after graduating the Police Academy, about 3 or 4 years before the beginning of the
series. | ||
| Sgt. David Michael Starsky | Paul Michael Glaser | |
| Born and raised in Boston, according to his accent; in NYC according
to some story references. Has at least one brother (Nick), and mother is still living. Father was
shot by gangsters -- implication he was either a cop or union organizer. Lived with grandmother
in L.A. for some time as a boy; joined U.S. Army at and for indeterminate time. Drove cab in
NYC. Engaged once to Ofc. Helen Davidson, never married. Seems to have a bit of a thing for
women in uniform, though.
| "Huggy Bear" | Antonio Fargas | |
| C'mon, they never even told us what his real name is. Does have close
relatives in the Caribbean -- possibly either naturalized or first-generation U.S. citizen, raised
in L.A. | ||
| Capt. Harold Dobey | Bernie Hamilton | |
| Classic American family - one wife (Edith), one son (Calvin), one
daughter (Rosey, left-handed), whom we meet in "Captain Dobey, You're Dead!". Has been
involved, at least peripherally, with the AfroAmerican civil rights movement. Chronic dieter, but
despite his girth and all the teasing he takes from his subordinates, no references made to high
blood pressure or other related ailments.
Recurring characters:
| Abigail Crabtree | Ann Foster | |
| Hutch's several-episode steady girlfriend, with whom he indulged a
heavy health-food habit. Left Los Angeles after being attacked by "The Monster," despite her
feelings for Hutch. | ||
| Officer Minnie Kaplan | Marki Bey | |
| Starsky's best flirting partner. Uniform officer at Parker Center,
perhaps in some clerical function.
| Merle the Earl | Raymond Allen | |
| Starsky's Torino coddler, and flamboyant-car customizer. And
flamboyant car-customizer, too.
| Sweet Alice | Nellie Bellflower | |
| Blonde hooker, sometime informant, who has a crush on
Hutch. | ||
| Kiko | Guillermo San Juan | |
| Hutch's "Little Brother". Lives with his mother, who decided to
foster [Kristy McNichol] after her father died in "Little Girl Lost".
| Orange | Connie Lisa Marie | |
| Probable prostitute with Little Orphan Annie fixation, including Sandy
the Dog. | ||
