- Thursday, November 6, 8:00 pm, talk "Mission to the Sun," to Cleveland Astronomical Society, Cuhahoga Heights, OH (free to the public).
- November 10-11: I will be visiting Alfred University, Alfred, NY, including a public lecture on Monday, Nov. 10, "Einstein and Heinlein: Bending Time in Science and Science Fiction."
- Saturday November 15: lecture "Sci-Fi or Science Fact?" at the NASA Glenn Visitor's Center, Cleveland OH (free, but pre-registration is suggested).

Writing is not my full time job.
In my main job, I am a scientist at the John Glenn Research Center, where I work on Mars missions and an developing advanced concepts and technology for future space missions.

Yes, a short story collection, "Impact Parameter (and other quantum realities)" is available from Golden Gryphon Press. And many of my stories can be found in anthologies available from your local bookseller, or from Amazon
- "In Mars Crossing, you quote lyrics from a song, "Abbas abd'el Sami." Is this song available anywhere?
The lyrics are here: Abbas abd'el Sami. If you want the music, you'll have to write it yourself.
- "In Mars Crossing, you show an expedition making rocket fuel on Mars. Is this real technology, or only science fiction?"
It's real technology. Look at information and links about making rocket propellant on Mars.
- "Do you have another novel coming out?"
Recently I've written some short stories (see the "what's next" section in What's New. )
- "Are you working on another novel?"
I have a contract to write two novels, which will come out from Tor Books. No release date for these, though.
- "Is one of these a sequel to Mars Crossing?"
The second one will have a section that takes place on Mars, although it's not a sequel. I'm eagerly waiting (and working on!) results of the upcoming missions to Mars
Science Stuff

- I am a member of the science team of the Mars Exploration Rovers mission, two highly-capable rovers named "Spirit" and "Opportunity" that are currently roving across the surface of Mars.
- Mars Pathfinder is one of the projects I worked on.

Here's my experiment (visible at the lower right corner of the Sojourner's solar panel) on Mars!
- I also led a Revolutionary Aerospace systems Concepts project to make a technology-based conceptual design for a mission to explore the surface and atmosphere of Venus. A summary of the mission design was published in the journal Acta Astronautica, and there's a great link to an animation and information on the conceptual design.
- One part of the project, a paper that I wrote with Ken Mellott about the design of a power and cooling system for a Venus rover, also appeared in Acta Astronautica
- A story about the paper was recently featured in New Scientist and was picked up by Slashdot.
- Cleveland Plain Dealer published an article about Solar Probe plus, a mission I work on.
- I worked on MIP, a project to demonstrate making oxygen for rocket fuel on the surface of Mars.
- I also work on the design of airplanes to fly in the atmosphere of Mars and Venus.
- An especially fun project was working with a bunch of physicists and physicist/SF-writers at a NASA workshop on Faster than Light Travel. One result of this was that we determined that cosmic wormholes could have net negative mass. This paper was so interesting that the University of California put out a press release about it! I was featured in Discover magazine article about faster than light travel; the article is available from Findarticles.com, and you can also read my comments about the article.
- Another project I spent a lot of time working on is developing was laser power beaming to power spacecraft. You can read a brief overview.
