SE Coast of Florida

This is very nearly the black hole of Florida to me. Most of it is far too built up for my tastes. I have good friends who live in Boynton Beach, but I avoid the Miami area like the plague. I often attend conventions in Ft. Lauderdale and enjoy the company but hate the traffic. Fort Pierce is my personal nemesis and seems to have a dark cloud surrounding it that always brings auto trouble to me.
On the other hand, the Everglades are beautiful if constantly endangered. The Loxahatchee National Wildlife Refuge is a wonderful place for wildlife of all sorts.
One time Rob MacGregor, Barbara and I took a canoe out into the Everglades. It was a day trip and very enjoyable. We saw tons of alligators, most of which, thankfully, kept their distance. We surprised one huge one as we rounded a bend where he was sunning himself. He hit the water with a tremendous splash. Rob immediately jumped to his feet at the stern of the canoe so he could see if we were in danger or not. He stood so quickly and gracefully I didn't realize he'd even moved. Rob has written many adventure books, including several Indiana Jones movie novelizations and he knows his way around in the wilderness. He's a good man to have along when you're surrounded by alligators.
