Come whenever you become conscious after your New Year's celebration, bring your work in progress or start on a new project for the new year. We'll write, write, write until we can't stay awake any more. Bring munchies and food for several potluck meals. To 3500 wds + 1 novella, pmt. after #5 will be $50 to $150 for longer stories, reprints & E-mail subm. okay] =Bare Bone= c/o Kevin L. Donihe, Chief Editor 1742 Madison, St. Kingsport, TN 37665 E-mail: kldonihe@hotmail.com =Bare Bone= is a tri-annual, digest-sized magazine (Jan./May/ Sept.) featuring the best in both psychological and supernatural horror, poetry, and art. Each edition features at least thirteen stories and thirteen poems. It will be printed by Dark Regions Press. Please note: =Bare Bone= is currently not accepting submissions at this time. The issues will be as follows: #1 Sept./Oct. 1998, #2 Nov./Dec. 1998, #3 Jan./Feb. 1999, #4 Mar./Apr. 1999, and #5 May/June 1999. Do you wish to submit to =Bare Bone=? Here are our guidelines... GENRE: Psychological fiction and poetry share center stage. In other words, we prefer material with an emphasis on character development. Supernatural tales and poems, however, will be accepted if exceptional or original. (Hint: Supernatural poetry is just about the hardest thing to sell here at =Bare Bone=.) Pieces featuring graphic sex/violence/language are acceptable only if these elements do not merely serve as crutches holding up an otherwise weak tale. We here at =Bare Bone= are NOT easily offended. WORD COUNT: All fiction will be considered up to 3,500 words. Slightly longer stories will be accepted if quality merits inclusion. We impose no line limit upon poetry apart from a restriction on epics. RIGHTS SOLD: One-time rights. After publication, however, all rights revert back to the author. Reprints are acceptable only if the contributor still holds the rights he/she is offering and discloses the manuscript's publication history. PAYMENT: One copy for fiction, poetry, and interior art. $3 for front and back cover art. COVER LETTER: This is a requirement. How else can I publish a reliable contributor's bio? FORMAT: Standard rules apply. All submissions must be typed and double-spaced. Include a one-inch margin (at least) on all sides. Hand-written submissions will be returned unread. Exceptions will be made if the contributor has a valid reason. If accepted, I will ask for the story on disk. If it is not available, I'll simply type in the text myself. No problem. SASE: Of course. We will not read a submission packet that lacks this most vital element. RESPONSE TIME: I try to respond within a week of receipt. If you do not hear from me in a month, feel free to query. Expect not only a personal reply with each submission but an update concerning =Bare Bone='s progress as well. I like to keep my writers informed. WHERE TO SUBMIT (Please note new addresses!) E-MAIL: kldonihe@hotmail.com: Yes, e-mailed submissions are acceptable. Send them either as attached documents or as part of the original text. SNAIL-MAIL: =Bare Bone= c/o Kevin L. Donihe, Chief Editor 1742 Madison, St. Kingsport, TN 37665 HOW TO BUY: Sample copies cost $4.50. A three-issue subscription, however, is priced at the reduced rate of $11.00. Make all checks/money orders payable to KEVIN L. DONIHE, not =Bare Bone=. News: November 13, 1998 =Bare Bone= will become a paying market after issue #5. (Exact pay rates will be posted when we reopen to fiction sometime in 1999.) In #6 and beyond, =Bare Bone= will feature a 12,000 to 20,000 word novella. (T.M. Wright and P.D. Cacek have already agreed to compose original novella-length works for my publication.) Payment for longer fiction will be somewhere around $50-$150 dollars. I've also decided to alter =Bare Bone='s format. It will be perfect-bound as opposed to saddle-stapled. September 1998 =Bare Bone=, following a long string of printer fiascos, has finally found a home in Dark Regions Press. The master copy will go out as soon as I am able to alter the layout to reflect a number of revised tales recently sent to my attention. (I also need to find a better scanner for the cover art.) In order to get Bare Bone back on a regular schedule, I will release an issue bi-monthly until May/June 1999. At that point, I will revert back to the initial tri-annual dates. After some calculation, I have ascertained that I have enough money on hand to produce at least nine issues. With reader support, I will surely be able to edit more. Each issue will be filled with at least ninety saddle-stapled pages. The first issue will feature glossy b&w covers. I hope to add a splash of color to subsequent volumes. Payment will be around $50-$150. Writers of shorter fiction and poetry will also be compensated, but exact amounts will not be set until they re-open to unsolicited fiction in mid 1999. Format will change from saddle-stapled to perfect-bound. [Speculations #24] =Inklings= Debbie Ridpath Ohi, the editor of the free E-mail writing newsletter =Inklings= recently announced that she is able to raise its payment rates for writers from 3 cents/wd to 5 cents/wd (US funds). She's starting to look for material for next year and welcomes queries. =Please read the guidelines= before sending submissions! You can get the most recent version of the guidelines by sending E-mail (which can be blank) to guidelines@inkspot.com. [Inklings, 9 Dec 98] =JoNa Books= A writer on sff.net reports that she sent a manuscript to =Tale Spinner= magazine, which came back with a "sorry but we've ceased publication" letter. However, Editor Joe Glasgow notes that "We are still publishing books under our imprint JoNa Books" and enclosed guidelines. Among their recently published titles they include two books about Texas Rangers, an "alternate history/ mystery" entitled "Pacific Empire," and some other stuff. They're willing to look at an intro letter, 2 sample chapters and synopsis for: Action Adventure, alternate history, historical, science fiction and military science fiction. They also take nonfic book queries in certain subjects. Payment is "negotiated on an individual basis with the writer. No advance offered at this time." They're not in Writer's Market, but don't seem to be a vanity press. Send submissions to: Joe Glasgow, PO Box 336, Bedford, IN 47421 [sff.publishing.market-reports, 7 Oct 98] =Thievin' Kitty Publications= Publishers of =The Edge=, Tales of Suspense and =Burning Sky=, Adventures in Science Fiction Terror, now have a new official web site that gives submission, ordering and lots more info at http://www.capecod.net/thievinkitty [Note: both =The Edge= and =Burning Sky= pay in copies only.] [DarkEcho, 3 Dec 98] =The Urbanite= Mark McLaughlin, editor of =The Urbanite=, just put #10 to bed and is working on issues 11 & 12, so you should know soon what's up with them, if you've been waiting.
