(GLs in Vol. 6 No. 18)] ANTHOLOGY =A Twist of the Knife= [Canadian print antho, H/DF ABOUT traditional monsters with a twist, to 5000 wds, pays $10, reprints and sim subs okay, e-mail subm preferred] This tentatively titled anthology, =A Twist of the Knife=, is scheduled for release in September 1999. It will be released in a black and white, magazine-style format and carry approximately 10 stories in all. If art submissions are ample and appropriate, each story will be individually illustrated. The cover will be full color, glossy stock. Requirements All submissions to =A Twist of the Knife= must fall in the horror, dark fantasy, or sci-fi terror genres. In addition, all submissions must deal in some way with a traditional monster, i.e. vampire, werewolf, ghost, demon, sorcerer, fairy, what-have-you. However, these creatures must be dealt with in an atypical way. Thus the Title, =A Twist of the Knife=. We want to see the traditional monsters... with a twist. In all cases, violence, nudity, and profanity are acceptable if relevant to the work and its over all theme. A few words of caution. Buckets of gore do not equal horror. Graphic descriptions of sex do not equal eroticism. Gore and pornography may have their place, but this isn't it. Fiction should be no longer than 5000 words, poetry no longer than 50 lines. Query for longer. There is no minimum length. Artists interested in illustrating should send approximately 3 to 5 samples of their work. Multiple submissions, simultaneous submissions and reprints are fine-- if stated as such. Approximately five story slots are still available in a =Twist of the Knife=. All submissions that do not fit the criteria will be considered for a regular issue of =Shadow Feast=. Please state if you do NOT want to be published in one of our regular issues. [CALLIHOO Editor's note: =Shadow Feast= is a non-paying webzine] Payment Terms This is Shadow Feast's first paying project. As such, =A Twist of the Knife= will not bring writers into the pay range of say... Steven King, but it will give writers a little bit of cash in their pockets. Each story / poem / art piece chosen will receive a $10 US flat fee on acceptance. Upon publication, each author will receive two contributor copies. Rights Acquired By Shadow Feast When your work is published in =A Twist of the Knife=, we acquire First North American Print Rights or North American Reprint Rights. If your work is chosen to be part of the online preview of =A Twist of the Knife=, we may ask for First Electronic Rights or Electronic Reprint Rights. At present we do not keep back issues on the web when a new issue is posted. Once the issue is out, all remaining rights revert back to author. Feel free to submit it again, even while it is still in =A Twist of the Knife=. In all cases, contracts will be sent. How to Submit All submissions to =A Twist of the Knife= must be received before July 1, 1999. A short cover letter must accompany all submissions. Submissions should be sent in one of the formats listed in the submission procedures section below, and should be clearly marked as a =Twist of the Knife= submission. Submission Procedures First, never send your only copy. =Shadow Feast= is not responsible for lost or damaged submissions. Never send multiple copies or multiple submissions at the same time, except in the case of poetry and art. Simultaneous and reprint submissions are okay if stated as such. Secondly, a short cover letter should be included with all submissions, whether they be electronic or in print. Please tell us a little about yourself. We tend to publish a short bio for every author and artist published with =Shadow Feast=, so it helps to have this sort of info ahead of time. Feel free to include past writing credits if you have any. If you have dozens, there's no need to include them all. Just include recent ones or those you are especially proud of. Also, if you would like your e-mail address or web page URL included with your bio, don't forget to add them. And, please, don't include anything in your cover letter than you wouldn't wanted printed and read by others. Thirdly, please include the following information with all submissions, postal or electronic: name, postal address, e-mail address, submission title, pen-name to be used if any, and approximate word count. Please indicate as well if the submission has been previously published and where. Beyond that, electronic submissions are strongly preferred. If for some reason this is impossible, please send submissions in standard manuscript or portfolio format via post to: J. Kirkwood Apt 1, 17728 - 81 Avenue NW Edmonton AB T5T 1M1 Canada Include a SASE and International Reply Coupon for response. Submissions missing these items will not be responded to. We will not telephone you. All electronic submissions should be sent as text in the body of an e-mail to kirkwood@nucleus.com. Art submissions should be sent to the same e-mail address as JPG or GIF attachments. And, while we will not turn down an e-mail submission because it is incorrectly formatted, it will be read quicker if formatted as such: Single spaced text with an extra line between paragraphs. Indicate special formatting such as italics, bold etc. with the use of brackets marking where such formatting should begin and end. Carson McCullers was a nineteen-year-old student at Columbia University when her first published work appeared in 1936. "Wunderkind," the tale of a fifteen-year-old pianist struggling to live up to her reputation as a prodigy, established McCullers as one of Story's most notable discoveries. Her first novel, =The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter=, appeared in 1940 when she was twenty-two, followed by =Reflections in a Golden Eye= (1941), =The Member of the Wedding= (1946), and =The Ballad of the Sad Cafe= (1951), among others. Continuing its rich history of literary discovery, =Story= announces The Carson McCullers Prize for the Short Story in honor of this distinguished writer. The competition is open to any writer of all styles and subjects. Submissions should be no longer than 5,000 words, and the deadline is May 3, 1999. You may send one check (in U.S. funds) and one Entry Form for all entries. 3. Works over 5,000 words need to be superb; stories approaching 7,000 words will have to actually stop a reader's heart. We are also looking for reviews of horror magazines and novels. Stories for =The Grimoire= must possess three elements: * Characters we give a damn about. * Strong, original stories with quality-crafted plots. * A love and understanding of how language creates tone, atmosphere, and imagery. Some things to consider when submitting to =The Grimoire=: * It is not enough to tell us a story. There is a distinct difference between a tale that is told and one that is written. Know how to write. * We believe that implicit is more frightening than explicit. This doesn't mean that we are averse to gore; quite the contrary. We enjoy a bit of splatter, but only if it advances the story. The same goes for violence and sex. But when you get right down to it, we're going to be much more impressed by a story that lets our diseased imaginations fill in the details. * No vampire stories. No exceptions. Even Anne Rice needs to peddle her wares elsewhere. * No poetry * If you don't have us hooked by the end of page two, we won't read page three. We're not callous. Quite simply, =The Grimoire='s co-editors both have bill-paying gigs that take up at least forty hours a week. Submission Format Guidelines * Submissions may be sent by e-mail or snail-mail. We would prefer to handle submissions electronically. It's faster, it's cheaper, it's easier to format. * All submissions should have your name, address, e-mail address, and word count on the first page. Please do not tell us anything about the story in your cover letter. Include previous credits, but hang on to the bio until we accept your story. * Electronic submissions should be in either Word (5.0 - 7.0) or rich-text format. Please do not send us work formatted for HTML. We'll just have to unformat it to fit our style. * Submit work as a file attachment as opposed to sending it in the body of an e-mail. * Address electronic subs to JCShanahan@aol.com and Seanchas@aol.com. * Snail-mail submissions should be in a standard manuscript format (non-dot matrix 12 pt. type, double spaced, one-sided). Include a SASE or advise us to contact you by e-mail. Without a SASE, sufficient postage, or an e-mail address, you'll never hear from us again. Disposable manuscripts preferred. * Address snail-mail submissions to: John Shanahan, 15 Spring St., Mansfield MA 02048 * Simultaneous submissions are acceptable, but please note them as such in your cover letter. We are not currently considering reprints. Publishing Rights Purchased and Payment * We pay a flat fee of $10 per story on publication for First North American Rights for a three month period. We also reserve the right to republish all stories accepted for publication in an annual "Best of" collection. Stories accepted for the "Best of" will be paid at a separate rate upon publication. That rate will be determined in the near future. Thank you for considering =The Grimoire=. Good luck. John D. My apologies. My response times from here on WILL be much better. (Ask anyone who sent me a manuscript within the past month--they've all gotten responses already.) "Most of that delay was simply due to the fact that I didn't have the money to actually pay for anything I wanted to buy, and the fact that I was spending all of my time getting the business ready, rather than reading manuscripts. Those factors have changed, and I'll now be reading stories far more rapidly than in the past." He also said, "I should note that the vast majority of what I've been getting is fiction (some of it pretty good), but I would like to see a bit more non-fiction." --Ian Randal Strock, Editor, Artemis Magazine http://www.lrcpubs.com, irs0@erols.com [sff.writing.response-times, 22 and 23 Jan 99] =Dell Magazines= In an E-mail from Sheila Williams, Executive Editor of =Asimov's=, she says, "Our physical address is changing.
