[From http://www.pulpeternity.com/gl/eol.htm] =Ranger Rick= [Print magazine for 6-12 yr olds, nature/wildlife emphasis, SF/F to 900 wds (use 4/yr), Pays to $600. No e-mail subs.] WRITERS' GUIDELINES SUBJECT SELECTION Our audience ranges from ages six to twelve, though we aim the reading level of most materials at nine-year-olds or fourth graders. Fiction and non-fiction articles may be written on any aspect of wildlife, nature, outdoor adventure and discovery, domestic animals with a "wild" connection (such as domestic pigs and wild boars), science, conservation, or related subjects. To find out what subjects have been covered recently, consult our annual indexes or the Children's Magazine Guide. These are available in many libraries. The National Wildlife Federation (NWF) discourages the keeping of wildlife as pets, so the keeping of such pets should not be featured in your copy. We also do not accept pieces on wildlife rehabilitation, except for the rehabilitation of threatened or endangered species. Except in rare cases, human qualities are attributed to animals only in our regular feature, "Adventures of Ranger Rick," which is staff written. Avoid the stereotyping of any group. For instance, girls can enjoy nature and the outdoors as muchas boys can, and mothers can be just as knowledgeable as fathers. Stories should reflect the ethnic and cultural diversity of our society. The only way you can write successfully for Ranger Rick is to know the kinds of subjects and approaches we like. And the only way you can do that is to read the magazine. Recent issues can be found in most libraries or are available from our office. To obtain a copy from our office, please send $2.15 plus a 9x12 self-addressed, stamped envelope. SUBMITTING MATERIALS Send a query describing your intended subject, along with a lead or sample paragraph. Any special qualifications you may have to write on that subject would be worth mentioning. If you are not an expert on the subject, please list your main references and names of experts you will contact. Please do not query by phone or fax. Include a self-addressed, stamped envelope with all queries. Unless you are an expert in the field you are covering, or unless your information is clearly anecdotal or from personal experience, all facts within your copy must be supported by up-to-date, authoritative references. NEW POLICY: An index number must follow each fact and must refer to a footnote listed on a separate sheet. (See example below.) Any manuscript not footnoted in this manner may be rejected, and any agreement on a kill fee may be cancelled. We strongly recommend that you consult with experts in the field when developing material and that one of them read the finished manuscript for accuracy before you submit it. Footnoting Style: ... the spitting cobra rears up and sprays venom into the face of any intruder ...(6) (Separate sheet) 6. Living Snakes of the World, by J.M. Mehrtens (Sterling Press, 1987), page 254. All submissions are made on speculation unless other arrangements have been made. Manuscripts are considered carefully and will be returned or accepted within one to two months. Our planning schedule is 10 months prior to cover date. Please do not submit your manuscript to other magazines simultaneously. Except for letters on our "Dear Ranger Rick" pages, we do not publish material written directly by children. Articles with children's bylines have in fact been written "as told to" an adult, by an adult. PAYMENTS Payments range up to $600 for a full-length feature (about 900 words), depending on quality of writing and research. Upon acceptance of a manuscript, a transfer of rights form will be sent to you. NWF purchases exclusive first-time worldwide rights and non-exclusive worldwide rights thereafter. Payment checks will be processed after we receive the signed transfer of rights form. (To receive a sample form send a self-addressed, stamped envelope.) It is not necessary that illustrations or photographs accompany your materials. If we do use photographs you've included with your copy, these will be paid for separately at current market rates. The NWF can take no responsibility for unsolicited submissions. However, we make every effort to return such materials if accompanied by a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Direct all correspondence to our editorial offices: The Editors, RANGER RICK, National Wildlife Federation, 8925 Leesburg Pike, Vienna, VA 22184-0001. The Editors RANGER RICK GUIDELINES - ADDENDUM Fiction: Science fiction, mystery, fantasy, straight-forward fiction, plays, and fables (but no myths, please). Particularly interested in stories with minority or multicultural characters and stories that don't take place in the suburbs. Present-day stories need to be about today's kids (with working and/or single parents, day care, etc.). Stories must treat children respectfully (no wise old grandfather teaches dumb kid, please). All nature and environmental subjects OK, but no anthropomorphizing of wildlife. We publish fiction about four times per year; plays or fables every two years. About 900 words maximum. Poetry: We are currently overloaded with poetry and not accepting new submissions. Puzzles: No word searches, instantly visible dot-to-dots, or crossword puzzles. A puzzle should be nature-related, challenging, fun, creative, unlike schoolwork, and something an 8- to 10-year-old can finish without help. It should also offer the possibility of an attractive illustration. Please cite your source for each fact in the puzzle, unless the fact is very well known. Sending a photocopy of the source is especially helpful. We buy one or two freelance puzzles a year, but would like to buy more with fresh ideas. Riddles: We aren't buying any these days. We're asking readers to send in their favorites and may occasionally get permission from a publisher to use a group of riddles from a book. 2/29/96 [From http://www.nwf.org/nwf/rrick/1998/jan98/ writsub.html] MARKET INFORMATION =Avon SF Anthology= The correct Zip code for Avon Books and the Avon anthology series is 10019.
