Paula Guran, editor of DarkEcho horror market/newszine, edits fiction for the webzine and talked Gothic Net publisher Darren Mckeeman not only into agreeing to this, but also to judging it along with Seth Lindberg. The Rules 1) We're not entirely sure what we do like on Gothic.Net, yet. We've got pretty broad tastes -- although we tend to like the strange and nontraditional, that doesn't mean we don't like good old fashioned eerie. The worst possible thing you can do is assume that just because we are called "Gothic" that it means *anything.* We confess that we are vampired out, angst-ridden-stream-of-consciousnessed out, and don't care much for imitators of anyone. In other words -- make it dark, write your best, and write with originality. 2) Stories (English-language only) need to be between 750 and 3500 words in length. Short works best on the Web and we will have a lot of stories to read. 3) Stories must be original and never before published, although they need not be written especially for this contest. 4) Submit stories in ASCII (text only) in the body of email to darkecho@aol.com with CONTEST as the subject. Include your name, e-ddress, a word count, and title of story along with the story itself. 5) You must subscribe to the DarkEcho newsletter at least for the duration of the contest. 6) Deadline for entries is MIDNIGHT EASTERN (US) DAYLIGHT TIME, August 20, 1998. [DarkEcho, 2 July 1998] MARKET INFORMATION =Ace Books= A writer says that Ace Books is open to unsolicited submissions. They are read by either Anne Sowards (Susan Allison's assistant) or by a freelancer. Unsolicited, unagented submissions addressed to Editor-in-Chief Susan Allison or to Executive Editor Ginjer Buchanan are returned unread. [Speculations #21, June 1998] =Amazing Stories= Editor Kim Mohan of =Amazing Stories= says they buy SF and occasionally fantasy or horror. "We're making a concerted effort to fill the magazine with SF. . . ." [Speculations #21, June 1998] =Brutarian Quarterly= Dominick J. Salemi, publisher of =Brutarian Quarterly=, says, "Reports of our demise have been greatly exaggerated. We have been publishing four times a year for six years and have not missed a beat. . . ." [Speculations #21, June 1998] =HarperEntertainment= According to =Variety=, HarperCollins is creating a new imprint, HarperEntertainment, that will focus exclusively on media tie-in and entertainment titles. The X-Files franchise is slated to be the first series under the new seal, followed by Godzilla and Lost in Space. John Silbersack, who created the HarperPrism and HarperHorizon, will serve as senior vice president and publishing director of the new line. The HE imprint is expected to debut this fall and will include calendars and other merchandise along with books. [DarkEcho, 2 July 98] ==End of the CALLIHOO newsletter for 7 July 1998==
