Copyright 2000, Goodnight Kiss Music [http://www.goodnightkiss.com/srules.html] =Storytellers: Disembodied Voices= [Mini-digital audio books (CD), terror/suspense stories, query first, pays royalties, 3 stories on each, reprints only for first vol.] Richard Wright, Editor Query to storytellers@lwpub.cjb.net http://lwpub.cjb.net Now Accepting Submissions! =Storytellers= is a new anthology series of digital audio books from Lone Wolf Publications, produced on 3 1/8" mini CD-ROM with each tale read by it's [sic] author. For the listener, it's a chance to have a story told to you exactly as the writer envisioned it, with each inflection, each breath, delivered as the writers hear it in their own mind. For the writers, it's an opportunity to make that delivery, to ensure that somewhere out there your tale is being lived as you yourself once lived it, spontaneously and directly. Each volume of the series will contain three stories in a digital audio format (at the time of writing this is MP3, and that probably won't change unless some new advance allows an even better showcasing of the work), read by the authors. Accompanying the digital files will be an original soundtrack for each reading, original artwork, and the stories themselves presented on screen. Each volume of the series will be separately themed. Storytellers is an author/publisher co-operative, with contributing authors, artist, editor, publisher and sound engineer all taking an equal share of the profits. The anthology will be a signed, limited edition, with a print run of 200 numbered copies. =Disembodied Voices= is the launch title of the series, scheduled for a December 2000 release, and is to showcase tales of terror and suspense. What I'm looking for is strong narrative above all else, stories which slot easily into the audio medium. Our secondary aim in seeking submissions is to find the 'modern classics' of our age - stories that have already proven their worth in other publications, tales so notable that they have spawned their own myths on message boards and newsgroups alike. We're looking for the stories that caused the letters page of the magazine to be inundated with both complaints and praise. As you might guess, this means that the anthology is not as 'open' in submission policy as others, including the =Extremes= series. In fact, I don't even want you to send me your manuscripts, in the first instance. Instead, I'd like you to query first, at storytellers@lwpub.cjb.net. Tell me about the story you're offering, where it was first seen, and why people think it's earned a 'modern classic' status. You don't have to agree with them! If in doubt, query. One warning only - manuscripts sent to the above email address without a prior query will be deleted without being read. FAQs 1. How will contributors be paid? All contributors -- i.e., the authors and the artist -- will be paid in royalties computed as a percentage of the profit accrued from sales of the anthology. These figures have not been determined yet, but will be similar to the deal offered for the first volume of =Extremes=. 2. Will contributors be given free copies? Will additional copies be available to contributors and at what price? All contributors will be give one free copy of the anthology. Additional copies will be offered to the contributors at 40% off the retail price. 3. Why are we querying first? Because, for the launch of the =Storytellers= series, we're looking for stories that have already garnered a fine reputation, as 'modern classics'. Though we're loathe to shut the door on more inexperienced writers, we really would like the series to launch with a bang. Future volumes will have an open door policy, because if =Disembodied Voices= does us proud, we can take more risks with presenting tomorrow's voices, disembodied or otherwise. 4. What rights are you buying? Reprint and audio rights. 5. What's your average response time? Response time to queries should be 48 hours or less. Where stories are then requested, expect four to six weeks (sooner, if we can possibly manage it). We won't keep your work off the market forever, worry not. 6. What do you need in the way of art? Nothing as yet. Art for volume one of the series has been assigned to Dave Fode, who'll be providing some of his rare colour work. Future volumes will be assigned as they're announced. It's worth sending some samples of your art here, as we have plenty of artists in our address book, and will rarely be putting out an open call. We'd like to see what you can do though... 7. What do you need in the way of music? Similarly, this is already in capable hands. Glasgow musician Junklight will be providing sounds and music for =Disembodied Voices=. Future needs will be posted as they arise. E-mail subm. okay.] Shane Ryan Staley, Editor The Dead Inn P.O. Box 338 North Webster, IN 46555 thedeadinn@deliriumbooks.com http://www.members.tripod.com/deliriumbooks/ delmag/diframe.htm =The Dead Inn= (formerly =Delirium Magazine=) is a hardcover publication which will be printed twice a year and contain 50K plus words of fiction in each edition. The hardcover will be a virtual inn divided by three sections ("floors") in the following manner: the first floor will contain gross oddities, the second floor will possess aberrant erotic behaviors, and the third floor will be reserved for the supernatural. Each author, with a story fitting in one of these three floors, will be issued a room number and given a key for a one night's stay at the inn where their story will be printed in the guestbook (hardcover). Stories must possess content under the above three categories to see print here. Looking for stories that will scare the hell out of readers -- extreme fiction. Not the kind of stories you find in most magazines that demand authors to cut nasty scenes. I want the authors to face the ultimate challenge -- to move me, scare me, make me squirm a little by the horrific imagery presented in their stories. Don't put restraints on your fiction -- let yourself wander into the deepest darkest alleyways of the mind. A story must possess plenty of horrific action and imagery to be accepted here. Not interested in stories that are driven by dialogue and conclude with only one minor "horror" scene. =The Dead Inn= is a market where you can unload those stories with sex and gore which most markets frown upon. =The Dead Inn= is a place where sex and gore happen all the time, but it doesn't take in bo[a]rders whose stories are made up of nothing but sex and gore. Offer a great story with interesting plot twists which just happens to have scenes with graphic sex and/or gore and you'll get to stay the night. Accepting e-mail submissions now -- cut and pasted in the body of the letter. If you submit this way, then please include name, mailing address, e-mail address, rights offered, and word count along with a short cover letter with credits before the story begins. Please include asterisks (*) on each side of words or sentences that are suppose[d] to appear in italics. WORD LENGTH: 2000-5000 words. PAYMENT: 1/2 cent per word for originals. No reprints, no poetry and no simultaneous submissions please. PRICE: $15.00 (add $4.00 shipping & handling--$4.75 if you would like priority shipping). Payable to Delirium Books. Mult subs for some sections okay. No cover letter. Only E-mail subm.] Mark Rapacioli, Editor Submissions: editor@planetrelish.com http://www.planetrelish.com/ =Planet Relish E-zine= is a Web-based magazine devoted exclusively to speculative humor. We accept short stories, and only short stories. No serials, no dirty limericks, no non-fiction, no novels, and absolutely, positively, no poems about Mike the Headless Chicken. Oh, yeah, and no erotica or outlandish sex humor -- I want my grandmother to read this magazine. Short Stories In the "Laughter" section, =Planet Relish E-zine= will publish up to four stories each month. Fiction is limited to 5,280 words, but shorter is definitely better. Short stories must be science fiction, fantasy, or horror, and must make me laugh.* Your humor can be anything from undead slapstick, to bleak futuristic satire, to fantastic Pythonesque chaos. Your writing must also hold my attention. It isn't enough to just toss a few jokes together and call it a story. Reprints and simultaneous submissions are OK, just let me know up front. Also, for simultaneous submissions, please mention the other market(s) to which you submitted the story. Do not submit multiple submissions for the Laughter section. For a hint on what my current needs are, always refer to the History section [of the website], which will be kept up to date as stories are bought. I try to publish at least one science fiction, one fantasy, and one horror story in each issue. *The following things usually won't make me laugh: commentary on politicians and sex, anything Y2K related, ethnic humor, rape scenes, suicide, violence against animals (except cockroaches, who deserve to be squished so hard that their guts skitter across the floor), and cross-dressing undead aliens (Sgt. Honcho made me write that one). Hope that helps. When in doubt, send it anyway -- what's the worst that can happen? Feghoots In the "Insanity" section, =Planet Relish E-zine= will publish one Feghoot story each month. Limit, 1000 words, but again, shorter is better. Please, don't use the original Ferdinand Feghoot character -- but, feel free to use the "Admiral Jim Feghoot" character or the Planet Relish setting. NOTE: Multiple submissions are permitted for the "Insanity" section. Before you submit a Feghoot, please read the sample. A Feghoot isn't just a short-short story with a joke at the end. A Feghoot is a short-short story that ends in a very groan-worthy pun. Added 1/15/00: Please, no more Feghoots about a bank director/loan officer/Intergalactic Bank Manager named Patricia Whack. ("It's a knick knack, Patty Whack, give the frog a loan....") Submission Format Submissions will be by e-mail ONLY to editor@planetrelish.com. Submit it as the text of an e-mail, or attach it as Word 6.0/95/97 (.doc) file or text (.txt or .rtf) file. Don't worry about margins, or fonts, or widows and orphans, etc. I save all submissions as text files anyway, so don't bother making them pretty. Please include your (pen) name, e-mail address, and word count. Put the word "SUBMISSION" (or for Feghoots, "FEGHOOT") in the subject line, along with the title. Don't send me cover letters or a list of credits. I don't need them, and an impressive list of published stories won't get you published here -- only an impressive, funny story will. If you get accepted, I'll ask you for a bio, a mailing address, a home page link, pictures of you in the shower or bath, and whatever else I may need. Compensation and Rights Purchased Payment is a flat fee of US$5 for each piece of fiction. Payment is on publication, by personal check, unless other arrangements have been worked out prior to publication. (For non-US writers, payment may be made by other means, such as US stamps for your SASEs. Others may want credit toward a paid advertisement. Feel free to e-mail the editor if you have any other suggestions.) =Planet Relish E-zine= buys Exclusive First Web Rights (or Exclusive Web Rights for reprints) for a period of 33 days. That means that, while your piece is on-line at =Planet Relish E-zine=, it may not appear anywhere else on the Web, including as part of an on-line anthology. All other rights (print, e-mail zines, CD-ROMs, on-line novelizations) remain with the writer. Did I mention no Mike the Headless Chicken poems? [sff.writing.response-times, 8 April 2000] =Dreams of Decadence= Warren Lapine describes how Angela Kessler, editor of vampire magazine =Dreams of Decadence=, deals with her slushpile. "As most people know we read one day a month, Angela reads the first paragraph of each story. If she likes the writings style she puts the story aside and moves onto the next story. She reads The stories that got her attention, for whatever reason, all the way through. The one's she doesn't pull get read all the way through by an associate editor. Angela does this because there just aren't that many great vampire stories, it's a tight niche and she asks for a lot of rewrites. If there were as many good vampire stories as there are science fiction and fantasy stories she'd probably be less thorough."
