Subm. from 1 Feb to 31 May 2000.] Lemonade Stand Productions Editor: Chaz Lee E-mail: TheRealHorror@aol.com "Submissions will be accepted beginning February 1, 2000 for an unusual collection of original horror. The anthology will be published electronically by Dreams Unlimited in the latter half of 2000." Concept: "The question every writer gets asked is--where did that idea come from? =Brainbox= will be centered around that sometimes-annoying question. All stories should be based on an actual incident or insight in the writer's life that planted a story seed in the head. The stories need not be written about that event, but only inspired by it. Now here's the kicker. All submissions should include a nonfiction piece describing the event, and the convoluted process by which the germ of an idea became the story. The nonfiction piece will be published along with the story to answer that 'idea' question. It may well be that the nonfiction is more frightening than the fiction." 2500 10,000 words (fiction and nonfiction combined), 5000 words preferred; pays 2 4% quarterly royalties. "Stories will be contracted on a six-month basis, after which additional one-year contracts will be offered. Only e-rights asked for, so after e-anthology made available, all stories will be free for print submittal." "As this is an e-anthology, all submissions should be e-mailed to the editor preferably as an attachment (ASCII, MSWord, RTF), but in the body of the E-mail is acceptable. Subject heading should be - Anthology Submission. No multiple submissions, please." "=Brainbox= is seeking to compile a good mix of supernatural, psychological, and unclassifiable horror. If in doubt, send it. This e-anthology will be a perfect opportunity to speak directly to your audience, or to illuminate the mazes of a horror writer's mind. Maybe people will stop asking that 'idea' question after this." Opens: Feb. 1. Deadline: May 31. No reprints, E-mail, simul or mult subm.] Ellen Datlow, Fiction Editor SCIFI.COM 48 Eighth Avenue PMB 405 New York, NY 10014 http://www.scifi.com =Scifi.com= is looking for literate, strongly plotted science fiction and fantasy stories--of any length--on a variety of subjects and themes. We want to intrigue our readers with mind- broadening, thought-provoking stories that will excite their sense of wonder. Characterization is crucial. And since many of our readers are not familiar with technical jargon, the stories must be written in clear, understandable prose. Payment is 20 cents a word. Originals only; no reprints. It is impossible for us to judge a story's quality without seeing the complete manuscript. If you have a story you think fits our requirements, submit it for consideration. But please do not send more than one story at a time; wait for a response on one before submitting another. Note: we do not publish sword-and-sorcery or space opera. Nor do we accept unsolicited poetry or simultaneous submissions. We will consider a self-contained story that is part of a novel, or may later be developed into one. All stories must be typed, double-spaced, and on only one side of each page. Each page should be numbered and include title and author's last name. The author's full name and address should appear in the upper left-hand corner of page one; an approximate word count should appear in the upper right-hand corner. If you choose to submit photocopies, they must be clear and readable. We do not accept any form of electronic submission. Please include an appropriately sized, self-addressed, stamped envelope (SASE). (Contributors residing outside the United States should use international reply coupons.) Even if you do not want your manuscript returned, we require a letter-size SASE for our response; manuscripts without an SASE will not be returned. We usually respond within three to five weeks after receiving a submission. Depending on numerous variables, however, it can sometimes take longer. Please give us ample time before you inquire about a submission's status. All submissions should be sent to the attention of Ellen Datlow, Fiction Editor, SCIFI.com, 48 Eighth Avenue, PMB 405, New York, NY 10014. [DarkEcho, 17 Feb 00] MARKET INFORMATION =The Age of Wonders anthology= Jeffry Dwight, editor of the sff.net anthology, =The Age of Wonders=, says, "Update: I'm being flooded with VR stories. Unless you truly feel your VR story is the hottest new angle on VR since the term was first coined, please send me something else. Thanks!" [http://www.sff.net/books/guidelines.html] =DNA Publications= Warren Lapine, publisher of DNA Publications, Inc., posted the following press release: February 2, 2000: for immediate release. DNA Publications has announced that starting in March of 2000, DNA Publications will begin providing free content on its web page. The content will consist of both previously unpublished material and reprints from DNA's five magazine, which include =Weird Tales=, =Absolute Magnitude=, =Dreams of Decadence=, =Pirate Writings=, and =Aboriginal SF=. "It is our aim to make DNA's web page a destination site for the science fiction community," said Publisher Warren Lapine. "We believe that our print magazines give us an inherently superior position to web-only publishing. Our web site does not have to fund our company, so we can afford to pay writers more money and thus offer the very best in content." DNA Publications will be paying 3 to 5 cents a word on acceptance for the original fiction on its web site. It will consider all forms of science fiction, fantasy, and horror. All stories must be original. Unfortunately, due to the volume of submissions we receive, e-mail submissions cannot be accepted. All submissions should be sent to DNA Publications, PO Box 2988, Radford VA 24143. [sff.publishing.news, 2 Feb 00] =The Firefly= A writer on sff.net says that a manuscript she'd sold to =The Firefly= was returned with a note that the magazine is closing. [sff.writing.response-times, 17 Feb 00] =The Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction= A writer on sff.net received a rejection from Gordon Van Gelder, editor of =F&SF=, that said he had a great deal of fantasy in inventory right now. [sff.writing.response-times, 22 Feb 00] =Roc= Laura Anne Gilman said, "Roc is, as of this moment, looking at submissions from unagented writers. We're looking for a detailed proposal and the first three chapters ONLY. And be aware that such manuscripts go directly into the slush pile, and remain there until someone has the time/energy to look at them. So we make no promises. (And include a SASE large enough for the sample chapters, or they won't be returned if the manuscript is rejected.)" [sff.publishing.roc, 22 Feb 00] =Science Fiction Age= Scott Edelman, ex-editor of the soon-to-be-defunct =Science Fiction Age=, says, "I have been told that the final issue of =SF Age= will be mailed with a wrapper. I believe that on the wrapper will be a note from the publisher saying that subscriptions will be transferred to =Realms of Fantasy= unless the attached postage paid postcard is returned. On the postcard, the subscriber (as I understand it; the cards have not yet been printed) will be offered the option of transferring the sub to the Sci Fi Channel magazine or the wrestling magazine *or* to get a refund. Please note that whenever you subscribed, the offer did indicate that you could get a refund on the remaining issues. I don't see how it could be any different here. Each reader will decide on his or her own what to do." [sff.publishing.news, 12 Feb 00] ==End of the CALLIHOO newsletter for 22 February 2000==
