Box 165322, Kansas City, MO 64116 http://www.interink.com/escape.html escape@interink.com Please address e-mail to the appropriate editor: Editor, general correspondence, and e-mailed fiction submissions, Allison Stein, escape@interink.com Non-fiction, David Phalen, dphalen@interink.com Art Editor, Marie Loughin, mml@interink.com GameZone Editor, Bill Van Horn, bvh@interink.com FICTION =E-scape= publishes science fiction, fantasy, horror, and any combination thereof. We look for distinctive writing, well-developed characters, and compelling plots. However, our final decisions are influenced by our personal biases and tastes: Science fiction elements should be convincing and support rather than dominate the plot. Horror should scare us, not disgust us--make us care what happens to the characters. Fantasy should blaze new trails, not retread rutted paths. DO NOT SEND shared-world stories, or stories set in worlds not of your making. DO NOT SEND stories containing gratuitous sex, violence, or gore. PLEASE use traditional manuscript formatting and include your postal address, e-mail address (if you have one), and word count on the first page of your manuscript; the author's name, manuscript title, and page number should appear on every page. Payment for fiction is 1 cent per word. Preferred length is between 500 and 5000 words. We buy first electronic publication rights with an option on nonexclusive anthology rights. Do not query before sending fiction. POSTAL (snail mail) submissions preferred. Please include your e-mail address if you have one. Always include a SASE. Non-U.S. postal submissions must include SASE with appropriate U.S. postage or International Response Coupons. E-MAIL submissions accepted (and preferred for non-U.S. submissions) Send e-mail submissions to Allison Stein at escape@interink.com as a text file or in a format compatible with Microsoft Word. NON-FICTION =E-scape= publishes a variety of non-fiction and commentary. Please read our latest issue to get a feel for our non-fiction needs and preferences. We do not pay for non-fiction at this time. Please address inquiries and submissions to the appropriate editor. Please include a SASE in all postal submissions. Interviews and Book Reviews: David Phalen, dphalen@interink.com Game-related articles and reviews: Bill van Horn, bvh@interink.com ART =E-scape= publishes several pieces of speculative art in each issue. Artists are encouraged to examine several recent issues to get a feel for our preferences and needs. We are looking for illustrators as well as original, unpublished, color art suitable for our cover. We are not looking for fill art at this time. Final art must be provided in IBM-compatible digital format. (The E-scape Art Director will work with artists to select a format that is most convenient for both parties.) Cover artwork should be suitable for 8 1/2" by 11" presentation. The acceptable formats include 24 bit color, 256 color, or grey scale graphic files in GIF, JPEG, or TIFF. Please limit artwork to a maximum size of 150K for illustrations and 300K for cover pieces. We've found that bright, contrasting colors show up better on a computer screen than dark, "mood" colors, especially for foreground subjects. Payment for art is $25 per illustration and $50 for cover artwork for first serial rights and first electronic rights with an option on nonexclusive anthology rights. Artists should contact the Art Director, Marie Loughin, mml@interink.com. ADVERTISING =E-scape= accepts advertising. Please contact the publisher, J. Patrick McDonald, jpm@interink.com or via snail mail for rates and availability. Submission Guidelines 1998, Interink, Inc. All rights reserved. The editorial e-mail, however, remains the same: bastmedia@aol.com. [E-mail dated 28 Jul 99] =Dark Regions Magazine= Joe Morey, publisher/editor of =Dark Regions=, sent the following to a writer on sff.net: "=Dark Regions Magazine= is either going to an annual or bi-annual status, or even possibly an anthology. I appreciate your positive comments on DR, but it is costing us $12,000 - $14,000 a year and shows no sign of coming close to breaking even, and we have had a very difficult time in finding quality material for the magazine. It has been very painstaking. The future of =Dark Regions Magazine= really depends upon the quality of work we receive. Ken, Bobbi and I feel it is in our best interests to consider the above options until early 2000. We not only want to be cost effective, but we want to bring to light the best possible fiction and poetry to the reader. That has always been our goal. There will be new guidelines for =Dark Regions Magazine= appearing in market sources. If you wish you may pass this on to any market resources you like. It would be appreciated, and thanks for your understanding. "No. =Dark Regions= is not dead at all! We plan to publish two Selected Poetry books next year, 2 -3 issues of Bobbi's new magazine, =The Firefly: A Journal of Magical Experiences= which is open to manuscripts at this time, and 1 - 2 issues of =Dark Regions Magazine=, or it could very well be an anthology--only time and rest will tell. I need to mull it over. "However, =Dark Regions Magazine= is still open to fantasy manuscripts until August 31, 1999. We have a real need of good original and entertaining fantasy tales! We are paying three cents a word. After August 31, 1999 =Dark Regions Magazine= will be on hiatus until early next year. Please watch market guidelines for all future updates." [sff.writing.response-times, 31 Jul 99] =E-Scapes= E-Scape webzine (www.interink.com/escape.html) will now accept submissions by E-mail at escape@interink.com THANKS! Thanks to Gerry for his hospitality at the recent mini-retreat held at his house July 30-31. The crepes and breakfast were wonderful! I hope everyone had as productive a time as I did. Those of us who visited Ophir and the Mercur cemetery enjoyed ourselves as well. ==End of CALLIHOO newsletter for 3 August 1999==
