OLD NEWS.

<I'll keep stuffing old news in here as the other news page gets too long.>

Child of Flame, volume four of Crown of Stars, is now available in paperback in the UK (Orbit) and in the USA (DAW books) paperback editions

Work on volume five has gone unusually slowly.  In part this is because I had previously written thirteen novels in thirteen years while also producing and raising three children.  I just plain got tired and ended up slowing down for that reason (otherwise called mental exhaustion).

Additionally, with so many plot threads to weave together, the story has simply become complicated enough that as I bind the threads more tightly it’s gotten a bit more difficult to get it all down right.  As I have discovered, it really is harder to pull plot lines in toward a conclusion than to open them up as you get started.

Things are beginning to fall into place, however.  As of early November I have reached page 800 of the manuscript, so I’m about 2/3rds done – and I’m really starting to get excited about how it’s all falling out as there have been some unexpected twists.   The first draft of volume five should be completed by March 2002.  It is scheduled for publication in February 2003, but it doesn’t have a title yet.  I have to thank you in advance for your patience.  This book in particular has been a long haul.

Once volume five is done I hope to get a strong start on the sixth and final volume (which will be titled Crown of Stars), so that it can be published in a timely manner, preferably not more than one year later than volume five.  My new motto is: No More Long Gaps Between Novels!  (But please don’t ask how I’ve done fulfilling my old mottos.  One goal in life is to continually improve. . . .right?)

I will have new fiction appearing in 2002 - a short story (technically a novelette) set in the Jaran universe.  Called “Sunseeker”, it follows a twelve hour period in the life of 15-year-old Rose Mikhailov, youngest daughter of Vasil Veselov and Karolla Mikhailov.  Rose was previously seen as an infant in THE LAW OF BECOMING; her elder sister is Ilyana, one of the main characters in that book (although Yana does not appear in this story).

Best wishes, and thank you very, very much for your patience,

Kate Elliott

As for other editions, I have now received Sternenkrone 7: Kind des Feuers and 8: Schatten des Gestern (Goldmann) in the mail, so both are available in Germany.  This translation of Child of Flame is by Susanne Gerold.

Older News:

Die deutsche Ausgabe von The Burning Stone (Übersetzung von Susanne Gerold) ist in zwei Bänden bei Goldmann erschienen, Der brennende Stein (Sternenkrone 5) und Das Rad des Schicksals (Sternenkrone 6).

Crown of Stars is also being published in Poland, by publishing house Zysk i S-ka Wydawnictwo.  The translator is Joanna Wolynska, who kindly emailed this information to me.  The titles of the books in Polish (not including Polish letters which I don't know how to reproduce) are: Krolewski Smok (King's Dragon) and Ksiaze Psow (Prince of Dogs). The Burning Stone is in the process of being translated now and will probably be published early next year (2001).

I've also heard that the publisher Astrolog (Israel?) bought The Golden Key, but I haven't seen a copy nor heard anything about it.
