Comic books, especially superhero
comics, have long been an element of my arrested development. I love the damn
things, and can wax poetic on subjects ranging from the peculiar psychoses of
Bruce Wayne to the legal improprieties committed by Daredevil.
I fell into the writing of superhero fiction through the well-meaning graces of
Keith DeCandido, then the editor of the Marvel Novels at Byron Preiss. I did one
Magneto story ("Connect the Dots" for THE ULTIMATE SUPER-VILLAINS),
then produced what I have no problem proclaiming one of the scariest Spider-Man
stories ever told ("The Stalking of John Doe," in UNTOLD TALES OF SPIDER-MAN
-- and if I, with my self-deprecation problem, can tell you that's a tour-de-force,
trust me when I say I'm not kidding).
I have always had special affection for Spider-Man, who has one of the two best rogue's galleries and one of the three best origin stories in all comicdom. So I seized the opportunity to move from stories to novels. It was a longer career detour than originally planned, but it did result in some interesting work, including:
TIME'S ARROW BOOK 2: THE PRESENT. Written with Tom DeFalco. My first novel,
middle book of a trilogy teaming Spidey with the Uncanny X-Men. I shove more
character cameos in this book that you can shake a stick at, whatever that means.
THE GATHERING OF THE SINISTER SIX. Mysterio targets Hollywood for blackmail,
terror, and revenge. Meanwhile, a mysterious figure known as the Gentleman hires
the Chameleon to put together a new incarnation of the Sinister Six. This book
features lyrics for the Broadway play "Submarine!", a treatise on
the superhero scourge known as "hood hair," more wild cameos, and
a team-up between Spidey's pal Flash Thompson and the third-string Marvel hero
known as Razorback, the mutant trucker.
THE REVENGE OF THE SINISTER SIX. Spurred on by the evil Gentleman, the bad guys target Spider-Man for a city-wide Day of Terror. Captain America elaborates on the phenomenon of hood hair. Mary Jane has a heroic moment. More cameos - can you name them all? Plus, the mystery of the strangely tormented villainess known as Pity...and a last-line cliffhanger to beat them all.
And finally, the upcoming THE SECRET OF THE SINISTER SIX, where the Gentleman's master plan is revealed, Electro demonstrates the lack of intelligence that has made him such a success in his chosen field, an attack by the bad guys wipes out the majority of the South Florida Science Fiction Society, and Spidey pushes himself to the limits to save Manhattan from the activation of the Oltion Field Generator.
More to come...
