I’ve
been called “the acknowledged Mistress of Book in a Week.” Book in a Week is a philosophy of writing and
a process designed to let a person write faster, easier and have as much fun as
possible doing so. It grew out of all
the things that I have learned as a writer over the years. And make no mistake—I am a writer before all
else! You will find information on this
website about workshops and coaching but I am a writer. I love to create worlds with wonderful
characters and imagine how people can find happiness and love and grow in ways
that let them create the lives they want to have.
I
write what I do because I believe that each of us also has the ability to create
the lives we want to have—no matter what the circumstances of our past may have
been. Whether in the Regency time period
or the present or the future, my heroes and heroines will always find ways to
rise above the challenges in their lives and treat others—or learn to treat
others—with kindness and honor and respect.
Most
of my books have been set in the Regency time period. Why not?
It was a time when so much was changing socially, politically,
economically, and in personal relationships.
And just like today people were trying to adapt to all those changes and
decide what to keep and what to let go of in terms of traditions and values and
beliefs.
My
latest project is a little different. It
involves were creatures and perhaps some unexpected magic. It wasn’t what I expected to write but some
stories grab you by the throat and don’t let go—they demand to be written! This was one of those stories. More as it develops.
Black
Cat of the Family won the Paranormal Category of the PASIC contest. I’ve created a blog for the hero, Deverell
Tregaron. He’s a werecat and he rather
insisted on a forum where he could talk about some of the things that didn’t get
included in Black Cat of the Family.
Naturally he called it Werecat
Conversations.
So....welcome
to my website. You will find information
on my published books and my speaking engagements, links to websites useful to
writers, tips for writers and for public speaking, and some of my personal
thoughts as well. -----April
Kihlstrom
Upcoming
Events:
I will soon
be offering more online writing workshops.
Online classes will be conducted via email only, no real-time or live
chats. To receive notice of these
workshops please subscribe to my email loop here. This will be a notification only loop so you
will only receive email when I want to let you know about an upcoming class.
(Note: We’re all
human, right? Thanks to not enough
coffee one Sunday morning and too much haste, I inadvertently made the original
loop a closed loop so I've created a second class loop. The same information
will go to both and this is the one that still lets new people
join...)

BOOK IN A WEEK
If you've already taken this class, please pass the information on to anyone who might find it of interest. I've timed the class so that it doesn't interfere with the RWA conference in San Francisco.
TITLE: Book in a Week
DATE: August 11 –
September
Deadline to receive application and payment:
Class Description:
I truly believe that when we are in tune
with who we are as writers, we write better and faster than when we try
to follow rules that suit someone else. This class is designed to take
you through all the steps of writing a book AND discover who you are as
a writer. It's also designed to help you sidestep any limiting beliefs you may have about your ability to write a book.
This class will take you through every step of the writing process--from planning to brainstorming to writing to revising and sending the manuscript out for publication.

Week 4: Intensive Writing Week (August 30 to September
7) (This is about discovering how writing fits into YOUR life. You
can't do it wrong. You won't fail. No matter what happens you will
discover more about yourself as a writer than you thought possible
during that ONE WEEK of writing!)
Week 5: Evaluating the
writing experience itself
Making revisions
Sending out material
The
class will be run by having members sign onto an email loop and
lessons will arrive via that loop. Lessons will also be posted in the
file section of the email loop so that students can download any
missed lessons directly. There will be opportunity for discussion on
the loop.
Bio: April Kihlstrom is an award winning author of
31 published romance novels. She believes Book in a Week is a way to
recapture the joy of writing and write faster and more effectively at
the same time. Always a slow writer, April was lured into
attempting Book In A Week by a group of writers on Genie. Much to her
surprise, she discovered it was a technique that worked well for her
and she really could write the first draft of a book in a week! Since
she began using the book in a week method, Romantic Times has called
her a “rising star” and a “diamond of the first water”.
April offers coaching to fellow writers as well as classes
and workshops in writing to both romance and non-romance writers and
has spoken at many conferences including: the RWA national conference
(romance) and the East of Eden conference (non-romance) .
Payment
for the class may be made by check or by Paypal.
