Writing Instruction

SCIENCE-FICTION WRITER'S WORKSHOP-I
An Introduction To Fiction Mechanics

Barry B. Longyear

Still the best starter on fiction writing.
A year after publishing my first story, Editor George H Scithers suggested I write this book because I was still close to what it took to move me from stumbling around to writing professionally. What I came up with was the book I was looking for when I began  trying to write.

Once upon a time there was a writer who lost his instructions for living and awakened from his last blackout in rehab and in the highest stakes adventure of his life.

"You know," began the old-timer, "if you hit your bottom often enough they call it a spanking."

The God Box

Fantasy Novel

Korvas the carpet merchant

A fellow in a faraway kingdom inherits a little box that always gives him what he needs---which is not always what he wants, although it sometimes gives him what he wants just to show him it isn't what he needs, which is what he needed at the time.  It would be a fantasy, except that god boxes really work.

"How Long does it take to write a
     book?"

The most fun I ever had writing was in doing The God Box. I simply didn't want to stop, hence I was done in about five weeks.

Movie Tie-ins

Enemy Mine
Barry B. Longyear & David Gerrold
Movie Tie-in

Paperback
New copies not available
"Whaddya mean they're mining silicon in the
      Enemy Mine?"

The original story didn't quite fit the plot of the motion picture, hence there had to be a new book. David Gerrold graciously relieved me of this odious task. Out of print.

About Media Tie-ins:

Slag Like Me
Barry B. Longyear
Alien Nation Novel

Paperback
New copies not available
The reviewer reported that the character of
Ellison Robb was "a thinly disguised Harlan
    Ellison." Accidental, but true.

Slag Like Me was an original  Alien Nation book. I did for Pocket as part of a two-book deal. It's a work for hire and Pocket has not kept it in print. Too bad. It's a ripping yarn.

The rights to media tie-ins are controlled by the publisher or production company, hence keeping them available is not up to us. Every so often used copies become available on amazon, Ebay, at bookfinders, etc.

The Change
Barry B. Longyear
Alien Nation Novel

Paperback
New copies not available
Turnabout

The Change was very loosely based on a screenplay by Steven Long Mitchell and Craig W. Van Sickle. Kind of fun to do to a couple of screenwriters what screenwriters traditionally do to authors.
