Enemy Mine (1985) Dennis Quaid, Lou Gossett, Jr. There are an astounding number of persons who like this movie. There is an incredible number who actually love it. I do not judge you. I am, however, somewhat flabbergasted. The short version is that the story served a specific, very important function in my life, and in the lives of those it touched. The movie didn't do that, at least for me. For the long version, read Run Drac Run. Regina and I need to recuse ourselves from grading this one, I suppose. We are much too close and too closely invested in the meaning of the original story. We thought we could probably suck start a leaf blower with this flik, though. The first time I watched it I actually cheered because it didn't turn out as bad as the screenplay. The second time I watched it, I sort of hid my face and sneaked out of the theater after about half an hour. It wasn't as bad as the screenplay, but it was b-a-a-a-a-d. Every time I am surfing the channels, it appears on my screen like some kind of fiendish recurring nightmare. I made a tape of it when it first appeared on television. You don't often get a chance to tape a movie done from one of your own stories. Anyway, it seemed like a good idea at the time. That was decades ago and I have yet to watch that tape. It wouldn't have been so bad if it had been crap from beginning to end, but it wasn't. Just enough was done well to let us know how good it could have been. It's out on DVD. Decide for yourself. I suggest, however, the book. If you liked the movie, though, that doesn't make you a bad person. A little peculiar, perhaps. Not bad, though. Mostly. Haven't seen it and
want to decide for yourself?
