My latest novel, Speak to Our Desires is available from Book View Cafe

My previous novel, Revise the World is available in a number of e-formats at Book View Cafe, and the Kindle version is available at Amazon. In novella form as "May be Some Time" this work was a finalist for both the Hugo and the Nebula awards.

"Gray To Black" is an original short story that appears in Rocket Boy and the Geek Girls.

I write science fiction and fantasy, mainly novels. Nine of my novels have been published. My two recent novels are available in e-format. The previous novel, Doors of Death and Life, was published by Tor Books in May 2000, to generally favorable reviews. Another previous novel, How Like a God, can be ordered on-line from the FoxAcre Press Web Store or I have a number of other novels to come.

I also write short stories and occasional non-fiction. I have a story in Patrick Nielsen Hayden's anthology Starlight 3.

I blog every week at the Book View Cafe Blog.

Every now and then I teach "Writing F&SF" at the Writer's Center in Bethesda, MD.

I turn up at a lot of Science Fiction conventions. Lance Oszko gave me a photograph of me at the World Fantasy Convention in 1995. Jane Jewell took a photograph of my old college roommate, Laurie Mann, and me at Boskone.

I volunteer for the Science Fiction Writers of America. Recently I produced a whimsical diagram urging members to run for office within the organization.

I knit and hang out with local knitters. I paint – walls, furniture, and water colors.

I live in a cottage a the edge of a forest with my husband Larry, the computer geek who built this web page. We renovated the kitchen in 1996 and the master bath in 2002. We are renovating the guest bath in 2010. The garden is steadily devouring the lawn, and Larry built a stone terrace.

As a girl, I attended the American School of Vientiane, Laos.

  • This is a sample from my short story "The Water Weapon," which appeared in THE DRAGON AND THE STARS, edited by Derwin Mak and Eric Choi (DAW 2010). It's a little steampunky alternate history.
  • Audio link to a reading of an original short story, "Maiden Mechanical".
  • Audio and video links to a reading of "Gray to Black," an original short story that appears in Rocket Boy and the Geek Girls, published by Book View Cafe
  • Times 50, my short story, originally published in Christianity Today, was selected for The Human Genre Project. I am on Chromosome X.

My Itinerary

This is where I'm going, and when I hope to get there. When the scheduled events have come and gone, Larry moves them (eventually) to a set of pages titled "Been There, Done That"

  • Kathi Overton scanned the cover to the hardback edition of Doors of Death and Life.
  • Bill Flynn scanned the cover to the hardback edition of How Like a God.
  • Lawrence Watt-Evans scanned in the other book covers and the picture of the painted bookcase.
  • Lance Oszko scanned in the picture of me at World Fantasy Con, 1995.
  • Ned Sublette took the photo at the top of this page.
