CS 202 – Spring 2005

Rules for Company (Team) Projects

Enrolling in this class mandates your commitment to the labs. Since teamwork has been recognized as a critical component for companies to compete effectively in today's highly dynamic and globalized business environment, it is important for the class to learn how to work effectively with other people. Each member of this class is required to join a project team of 5~8 persons.

Hire your Company members carefully. You will need to spend a lot of time discussing projects or preparing for exams together with your fellows, so you had better check into the course schedules of people you interview. Each Company CEO must print and hand in their final member list by Wed, Feb. 23th. After we complete a few projects, there may be a “downsizing day”, where people can move between companies. We will discuss this later in class. Each CEO must retain at least 5 members in order to remain a viable company.

Our teamwork approach requires that each individual work closely together with other members on the same team (at least during our class hours) and make contributions to the completion of each project. By default, each member in the same group will receive the same score on each project, possibly altered by evaluation report(s) from the company member(s). Anyone may write an evaluation, but the CEO must write one for each member for each project.  In the evaluation report, you need to evaluate each member, including yourself, giving them a grade of A thru F, and you should also elaborate briefly on how each member contributes based on lab participation, cooperation, asking questions, helping other members solve problems, etc. You may either e-mail your evaluation to me at LarsonHomework@hotmail.com or type your report and turn it in with the submission of the project.  Please note that I reserve the right to modify the peer evaluation for each member if I determine that the evaluation is not consistent with my observations in the class. Each project will be graded on points, and members in the same group will receive a score proportionate to his/her averaged contribution.

Job Descriptions:

CEO: Hires and fires members, although he/she should consult with the other members about their decisions.  CEOs must write an evaluation on everyone else’s performance in the company after each project.  A paragraph is sufficient. CEO’s keep an attendance roll for their employees, which will affect their grades.

CIO: The technical leader of the company. They decide the implementation strategy for each project.  Normally, they get the most technical portion of any project to perform.

VP: A dime a dozen.  The grunt workers of your executive staff, they must be kept happy and working.

NO CHEATING:

Each project report must represent your own group’s effort. Copying another company’s output, in any form, is absolutely prohibited. plagerizing your report, failing to document your sources, or otherwise taking credit for the work of others will result in disaster for the entire group.  poor ethics will result in no grade for the project report. In addition, I might need to question the source of your project report whenever the situation warrants.
