book news

WorldCon Every year six or eight thousand fantasy and science fiction writers, editors, readers, and players get together to celebrate the genres we love. This year the World Science Fiction Convention, also called Sasquan, will be held August 19-23 in Spokane Washington. I'll be there doing panels, readings, a strange version of The Gong Show, and even having a kaffeklatsch - an opportunity for an up close and person talk about anything with eight or ten readers (gotta sign up for this one). As those who've met me will attest, I love to talk books and writing and just about anything else. There's still time to get in on the fun. Hope to see you there!

Here's my schedule:

Thursday 13:00 - 13:30 Reading
Thursday 16:00 - 16:45 Panel: Violence in Speculative Fiction
Thursday 17:00 - 17:45 Panel: Autographing
Thursday 20:00 - 20:45 Panel: On Beyond Ripley: Woman and Warriorship
Friday 19:00-21:00 Broaduniverse Rapidfire Reading
Saturday 10:00 - 10:45 Kaffeklatsch (sign up in advance)
Saturday 19:00 - 22:00 SPoCon Gong Show (don't ask me!)
Anytime in between events is fair game for visiting over tea, lunch, a drink, or whatever.

Dust and Light Forthcoming Copyedit review of Ash and Silver is done, along with the last substantial improvements, tweaks, and corrections. Whew. Next time I see it will be in the proof stage, typeset, when I can only make corrections small enough it won't change the pagination. The Sanctuary duet has been a long journey, taking me to places I was totally not expecting. I hope my readers enjoy the path as well...

I'm so delighted by the cover art for Ash and Silver, I just can't express it. Gene Mollica did a smashing job with my description. Seems like I said something about badass...

Yes, this is Lucian. (And there's a larger view.) Ash and Silver will be released in December 2015.

Do you like teasers? Visit the new Sanctuary Duet page. Meanwhile, if you haven't read Dust and Light as yet, you can check out the opening chapter. Or read the starred review form Publishers Weekly. You can find the book at independent bookstores, Amazon, Barnes and Noble, Powells, or other online booksellers.

Dust and Light Blackguards! The Blackguards anthology from Ragnarok Publications is available. My story, Seeds, tells of a meeting between a twenty-year-old runaway sorcerer who has been serving in King Eodward's legion (sound familiar, anyone?) who has an unfortunate run-in with a certain lawman who is trying to get a job as the Coroner of the Twelve Districts of Palinur. Here's the opening snip:

If any hierarch, priestess, monk, or practor were to ask me where I choose to worship my gods, I would have to say a friendly sop-house. I take no preference among the Elder Gods, the Karish upstart Iero, or anyone else’s divinity, offering libations, prayers, and oaths equally to them all as the occasion demands. But in all this wretched world there’s naught to compare with a fine bath, a barrel of mead, and a merry melee of pipes, dancing, and new friends to put me in mind of the sacred.
I hope it's as fun to read as it was to write. If you didn't back the Kickstarter, you can pick up the anthology from Ragnarok or Amazon.
