    Patrick Dorismond is shot by undercover police, sparking outrage in the Haitian and wider black communities.

  • June 11, 2000
    Close to 30 women are assaulted and groped in Central Park during the Puerto Rican Day Parade while cops, under orders not to provoke parade-goers, stand by.

    Another blackout hits New York (and parts north and west, we hear). Locals waver between repeating 1965 or 1977; opt for 1965.

  • Oct. 15, 2003
    The Staten Island Ferry crashes into its dock, killing 11 and injuring many more.

  • Jan. 10, 2004
    Monologist, actor, and part-time Soho fixture Spalding Gray disappears. Friends and family fear he has thrown himself off the Staten Island Ferry -- an idea the depressed Gray has mentioned before. His body is found in the East River on March 9, and identified by dental records.
