What's New?

Fall 2008 Update: A few bits of news to report. First, some disappointing news: David will not be attending World Fantasy Convention in October/November as originally planned. Rising airfares and similar concerns have made the trip impossible. David offers his sincere apologies to the organizers of WFC and any fans who had been looking forward to seeing him there. Second, this website has been updated and now includes pages for his next release, The Horsemen's Gambit, book II of Blood of the Southlands. Read sample chapters from the book here. Late summer, and David is back from WorldCon in Denver, where he had a great time. He has just finished the third and final volume of his Blood of the Southlands trilogy, and he's beginning to make preparations for the January 2009 release of The Horsemen's Gambit, book II in the series and the sequel to The Sorcerers' Plague. LibertyCon in Chattanooga, where David was a special guest, was a huge success and great fun. One thing to come out of it was a podcast of a panel David did with Toni Weisskopf, of Baen Books, and the con's literary guest of honor, Harry Turtledove. The panel on future trends in publishing was moderated by Stephen Euin Cobb, host of "The Future and You," and a podcast of the panel can be found here on Stephen's site.

Happy Summer, everyone! July 4th is right around the corner, and this seemed like a good time for an update on current goings on. David has a new short story out in the summer issue of Orson Scott Card's Intergalactic Medicine Show. It's called "Cassie's Story, and it's a bit of a departure from his usual work. Hope you enjoy it. On Wednesday July 2 David blogged with his agent, Lucienne Diver at her blogsite. They batted around issues relating to the agent-author relationship and how it works, how to make the most of it, etc. Check it out!

In addition to the 2008 highlights mentioned below, David has also sold two short stories so far this year. One, called "Cassie's Story," will be appearing in the summer issue of Orson Scott Card's Intergalactic Medicine Show. The other, "The Lost Children," will be published in Black Gate Magazine later this year. More details as they become available.

2008 has been a great year so far. The Sorcerers' Plague, book I of Blood of the Southlands was released in December '07 (sample chapters), and has been selling well. January saw the paperback re-release of Weavers of War (sample chapters), the fifth and final book of Winds of the Forelands. David has already appeared at Chattacon, RavenCon, the Virginia Festival of the Book, and at ConCarolinas, where he was a Special Guest. In July, he will be a Special Guest at LibertyCon in Chattanooga, Tennessee. For a complete listing of David's scheduled appearances please check here.

David has added two new conventions to his Appearances page -- WorldCon in Denver, August 6-10, and World Fantasy Convention in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, October 30-November 2.

David has yet another blog to tell you about: this one is a group effort with fellow fantasy writers Faith Hunter, Misty Massey, and C. E. Murphy. Together they have recently started a group blog devoted to writing issues. It's called "Magical Words." Come take a look, leave them a comment; let them know what you think. Oh, and those cool photos cycling through the title banner? Those are David's.

As always David is posting to his blogs at Wordpress.com and LiveJournal.com, answering questions on his author forum, and posting to his Amazon Direct blog. He is also a member of SFNovelists.com, an online community of science fiction and fantasy writers, where he will be blogging occasionally.

Reviews are starting to come in for The Sorcerers' Plague, book I of Blood of the Southlands, which will be released in December 2007. Publisher's Weekly and Booklist both loved it, and Romantic Times gave it four stars (which means that they loved it, too). More reviews should be coming in the next few weeks.

What else is new? Well, this site is new, for one thing. It has been totally recreated! All right, not totally. Some material was taken from the old site. But there's far more to this new version than just a new color scheme. There are now links to David's Author Forum and his brand new Blog. You can now find sample chapters from David's upcoming release, The Sorcerers' Plague, book I of Blood of the Southlands, as well as maps of the Southlands and other information about the world in which it's set. You can read David's short story, "The Christmas Count" here (previously it was only available at the SciFiction archive).

February 2007 witnessed the release of two books from the Winds of the Forelands series. David and his family have recently returned from a year in Australia. It was a fabulous, adventure-filled year during which they traveled all over the Land Down Under and twice visited New Zealand. Along the way they made many new friends, ate great food, drank some lovely wines, and saw some truly spectacular landscapes. This site is no longer buying new fiction, which is a shame, because it published some fine stories during Ellen Datlow's tenure as editor. The archives will be maintained, however, so visit the site and read some of the excellent stories Ellen found for us.
