The course:
This was a more difficult course for me than the June 24th event, but it was also a lot faster. For this event I had an instructor riding with me in all of my rides except the first. I got some tips for improving my driving. The main thing was that I thought I had been using two hands on the wheel, but actually not and I'd been "overdriving" the car. By settling down and keeping my hand movements smaller I was able to improve my driving considerably. My first run, without the instructor, was actually my best time, but I was carrying a significant weight penalty with the instructor in the car. Also, I made a bad mistake in the last run, coming out of the second carrousel too wide and not being able to make it to the left side of the first pylon in the second slalom. I had to take the slalom on the other run, which was much slower and put me on a slower line for the finish.
For the first slalom (top of the image above), people used both lines--going to the right and to the left of the first cone. I went to the left first, at the advice of my instructor, and I think that was probably the best choice for me.
I had four runs on this course. The second run, I DNFed ("Did Not Finished"--meaning failed to complete the course correctly so the time is not counted) on the entry to the first carrousel. The cones on the inside of the curve looked, at speed, like a gate, and so I went through them to the inside of the curve. Oops. Mistake. My 3rd run was another DNF. This happened after the slalom. In the series of turns after the final slalom I went past the wrong side of one of the corner marking cones. Oops again. My fourth run, however, did produce an official finish but it was actually my slowest time, probably because of that mistake (mentioned above) in getting into the last slalom.
My times were 50.633 (Best official time), 52.729 (DNF), 50.211 (DNF), and 52.910.
Last time, I was 9.118 seconds behind the class leader. This time, I was 7.363 seconds behind the class leader. In percentages (based on the leaders time), I was 19.4% slower than the leader last time and 17.0% slower this time.
Getting better.
