Soap box time. The publisher pays you, not the other way around. If the money is not moving from the publisher to you, then, in most cases, you are being cheated.
There are a few exceptions in the cases of family histories, books of poetry, and other items with no real commercial market where if you simply must have it published, you can self-publish. Even in that case, I would avoid subsidy publishers.
