Frequently Asked Questions

I will try to answer all questions quickly. If you want to know something that isn't included here, please use the contact form to send your question and I will reply as soon as I am able.

Also, a special note on what you can do to support your favorite authors.

Are you available for con appearances or to teach workshops or classes? What is your experience?

I am available for both, and perfectly willing to make myself useful. Email me if you are interested and we'll work something out. I have a B.A. and M.A. in creative writing from the University of California--Davis and Iowa State University respectively, and I have a Ph.D. in literature from Ball State University.

I've been teaching a variety of university-level writing courses for years now, running the gamut from freshman composition, editorial workshop, creative writing workshop and fiction writing workshop, not to mention literature courses. I enjoy teaching a great deal and love the opportunity to work with new writers in workshops and cons.

Will you look at my manuscript?

Much as I enjoy teaching and enjoy working with new writers, I don't have the time beyond my regular job, writing, and workshops and cons to read other people's work. Not only that, but there are some possible legal issues to circumvent. I recommend putting together your own workshop group, or try a group like Critters, which is an excellent online sf and fantasy workshop.

You might also go to the SFWA site or the SFF.net site for essays and articles on writing and publishing. See also my links page, under writing, for other excellent resources. That said, if you have more general questions you think I might be able to answer, do email me and I'll see what wisdom I might be able to offer.

Are you available for book clubs or discussion groups?

Book clubs are a lot of fun and I enjoy them. So yes, schedule permitting. And in fact, I am also happy to participate in author chats or newsgroups. Just send me an email and get something set up.

Can I do a Role Playing Game or write something based on your world or characters?

Because of copyright issues, as well as contract issues, I can't give permission for these sorts of things. But I appreciate that you think my books and characters worth pursuing on your own.
