You know, I don't want the president of the country to be my moral leader. I don't want anyone in the government to be my moral leader. My morals are none of the government's damn business. ![]() Back when we were all kids we were told that The United States was a democracy. Later we learned that it wasn't really a democracy, it was really a republic, since the president wasn't directly elected. But now I think that it's not even that. We elect representatives, but they sure as hell don't represent. It seems more of an oligarchy I think. I hold opinions about a great many things, and have my own ideas about what laws I'd like to see in place, and what rights I'd like to see allowed and enforced. But I know that I am just one voice, and I was led to believe that in this country I would have to find others who agree with me about whatever I feel passionately, and then in turn try and convince even more people to agree with my point of view in order to have a majority opinion and have the appropriate laws and amendments passed in our government. But I now know that this is baseless. Our representatives do not represent. They do not take into account what the majority of their constituents want. They do whatever the hell they feel like, according to whatever whim that strikes them, all with the ultra-lame excuse that the "people" don't know any better. Is anyone else besides me thoroughly insulted at the non-representation going on in Congress? It really shouldn't matter how you feel about the whole Clinton/impeachment thing as far as him deserving it. But it should matter to you that the majority of the American people stated quite clearly that the did not want the president impeached, but the Republicans went ahead and pushed it through anyway. Personally, I'm offended and ticked. Now I've never been a huge fan of Clinton. I didn't vote for him. But the Republican party has thoroughly pissed me off with their complete disregard for the wishes of their constituency. What issue will they ignore our opinions on next? The impeachment thing is a pretty huge issue and they had no trouble going their own merry way. What next? Women's rights? Abortion? Welfare Reform? Personal Liberties? They obviously don't give a shit what the majority wants, and will do whatever they hell they want, because they obviously know better. I've been registered Republican since I was old enough to vote, though I am by no means a party-line voter, and will vote for whoever I think will do best regardless of party. But, I'm sorry. I can't trust representatives who don't represent. We may not be a true oligarchy, since we do still (for now) have the power to elect these people who go and do whatever they please up in DC, but we're getting far too close for my comfort. So as long as I am able, I am going to do what I can to protect my right to fair representation. Unless there are some drastic changes, I will never vote Republican again. ![]() And even though I don't care for Clinton, I don't blame him for not resigning. There are so many questions about the rightness of this impeachment that I'd be making the damn congress work for it too. Take the trial. We've gone this far into the mud. What's a little more? |
