Well, we did get the house we wanted--hence one of the reasons for my brief hiatus from journalling. I am essentially completely moved; there's only a small amount of stuff left at the old house. The computer is still at the old place since we've had a real bitch of a time gettng the cable people to come out and hook up cable (and cable modems) at the new house and I did not want to be sans internet for an undetermined amount of time. So, I've been stopping by the old place once a day to check email and journals and load up a box or two of miscellaneous crap that is left. The move was actually fairly painless and certainly the easiest move I have ever made. The trick? Hire people!! But don't hire actual movers, since they want to charge you a friggin' fortune. We hired 3 large men from Turning Point, which is a drug rehabilitation ministry. Two of the guys had actually worked as movers before and knew exactly how to pack the truck and arrange things so that nothing got broken. It cost us $8/hr per worker, and we had to provide the truck, but we managed to move Jack's condo and my house (on two separate days) for about $400. Jack has a lot of big heavy furniture, and his dining room table is one of those big fancy glass-top deals that weighs a zillion pounds and you just know will get broken or chipped or something. I have my relatively brand new bedroom set which is also enormous and heavy and something I did not want to see scraped or scratched. But, in the entire move the only thing that got broken was a small glass plate that Jack had had on his back porch and was quite non-valuable. Everything else came through with zero damage. And, the beautiful thing was that I didn't have to carry anything! Including my boxes and boxes of books! So we are essentially all moved in and most of the stuff is unpacked and put away. The office is still "under construction" but last night I managed to get about 90% of my books on the shelves. I'm also gradually adjusting to this whole Motherhood thing. I kinda got thrown into the deep end with this suddenly being a partner in raising a 13 year old. Wow. She's actually a good kid and very bright, but she occasionally has moments of...um... being a teenager, and I have to remind myself that no one ever said this whole parenting thing was a snap. I think Jack and I make a good parenting team though, and it's extremely gratifying to me that he sincerely solicits my opinions and advice when it comes to issues concerning the Daughter. So, being a Mom is pretty cool. By the way, I'm also a Gramma. [hysterical laughter] Jack has a son with a baby, and his oldest daughter is expecting at the end of June. Never let it be said that I do things by halves. |
