I won't forget you, Jennie...

That night, Cathy dreamed again.

This time, in her dream, she stood once more in the graveyard where Jennie was buried. Grass had sprouted from the grave, under the tombstone that read JENNIFER MARIE BRODIE, BELOVED DAUGHTER. THE MAIDEN IS NOT DEAD, BUT SLEEPETH.

Abruptly, the landscape wavered and changed from the springtime cemetary to the bare trees and brown, withered grass of Johnson's Swamp. Ragged clouds scudded by overhead on a cold autumn wind, just as they had on that day when the hunters had found Jennie's body.

Then, from beyond the trees, Cathy heard a girl's voice, screaming and sobbing. Between the cries and sobs came the same words repeated over and over: "Oh, no, help me! Help me!"

It was Jennie's voice. Cathy stood, frozen, while the screaming died away. After a long-drawn-out, silent pause, the bushes under the trees began to shake and rustle, as if some big clumsy animal were trying to move through them.

Then the thing emerged, and Cathy began to scream herself.
