Stories of the Fantastic
Edited by Michael Sterns
Illustrated by Michael Hussar
"A collection of thirteen stories that goes far beyond the typical sword/quests/evil wizards perception of fantasy. The selections are well-written, neatly plotted works that ... will leave readers with plenty to muse over."
-- School Library Journal
A wizard's dozen is a magical number -- sometimes twelve, sometimes more -- of something fantastic. In the case of this volume, it is a collection of thirteen spellbinding tales that together make a heady brew of wonder and enchantment.
Here you can make the acquaintance of a werewolf princess and a dangerous water nymph, journey through a computer to the land of Faerie, travel with a clan of Sea Giants, meet the feisty Princess Who Kicked Butt and the midget giant Efrum, and witness a fairy child's kidnapping by a band of wicked ants. These are just a few of the wonderful characters inhabiting this wizard's dozen tales.
Among the popular and award-winning contributors are Bruce Coville, Patricia C. Wrede, Will Shetterly, Charles de Lint, Betty Levin, and Jane Yolen. This is the first volume of a series of short-story anthologies by today's best fantasy writers introducing readers to the literature of the fantastic.
Michael Stearns was born and raised in San Diego, is a graduate of the University of Southern California, and holds an M.A. from Hollins College, where he won the Andrew James Purdy Award for Fiction. He currently lives in Washington, D.C., where he is completing a novel.
"Even students who are not fantasy aficionados will enjoy this volume.... Highly Recommended."
