Match It for Pratchett

Esther says: You all know the now-not-so-new news about Terry Pratchett having Alzheimer's. For those of you who want to (and can) do more than express your sympathy, there is now a site called "Match It for Pratchett."

Terry and his wife Lynn have made a donation of $1,000,000 to Alzheimer's research and the Powers That Be are hoping to be able to get folks to match that sum. Given how many fans and friends Terry has, it would not take much per person.

I refer you to: http://www.matchitforpratchett.org

And I commend you to donate. I'll be doing so. You can do it either by direct donation, via the tip jar, or by buying a shirt on Cafe Press. The above URL will take you to a page with links to all three possible donation venues.

Please note that the direct donation asks you to enter a sum in BRITISH POUNDS, so be sure to do the currency conversion math before you type in a number.

And remember: this is going to benefit Terry but it is also going to benefit so many more people out there!

Let's do this.

Esther Needs Your Money!

Once again, Esther is participating in the 2008 EIF Revlon Run/Walk for Women on Saturday, May 3, in New York City. Created in 1993 through the committed and collective efforts of the Entertainment Industry Foundation, Lilly Tartikoff, and Ronald O. Perelman, the EIF Revlon Run/Walk For Women has grown to become one of the nation’s largest 5K fundraising events for fighting women's cancers. To date, the Run/Walks (LA/NY) have distributed nearly 50 million dollars for cancer research, counseling and outreach programs. Thanks in part to these funds, new treatments are being developed, and lives are being saved.

If you would like to support Esther's fundraising efforts for this event, click on the Revlon Run/Walk for Women link in the sidebar, or just click here.

But wait -- she's not done yet! The AHA Wall Street Heartwalk takes place on Tuesday, May 20, also in New York City. As the name might hint, this 5 K course meanders through the Financial District, and raises funds to fight heart disease and stroke. As Esther said, "Since joining, I have learned that heart disease is the #1 killer of women. That's scary, and when I'm scared I want to do something so I can stop being scared. This is it."

To make a donation and support Esther's fundraising efforts for the Heartwalk:

  1. Go to http://www.heartwalknyc.org
  2. In the left-hand column under GET INVOLVED, click on FIND A PARTICIPANT
  3. Type in "Esther Friesner."
  4. THERE ya go! Bob's yer uncle, easy-peasy, and maybe even SHAZAM!

And as always, Esther thanks you for your support!

Yes, Virginia, Esther WILL appear at the First North American Discworld Convention!

Esther has been invited to be an Honored Guest at the First North American Discworld Convention in 2009.

The First North American Discworld Convention will be held September 4 - 7, 2009 (Labor Day weekend, which includes a Monday holiday) at the Tempe Mission Palms Hotel in downtown Tempe, Arizona (near Phoenix). It will be a celebration of the Discworld universe created by the Guest of Honor Terry Pratchett; in addition to Esther, other guests include Diane Duane and Peter Morwood, with more to be announced.

The weekend will include panels, presentations, readings and other activities for Discworld fans, such as a Maskerade, a Banquet, a Marketplace (dealer's room/art show), a Charity Auction to benefit the Orangutan Foundation, a Hospitality Suite, and other activities for attendees.

The North American Discworld Convention is being sponsored by Leprecon, Inc., an Arizona non-profit volunteer corporation.

BREAKING NEWS: Esther says, "For those of you who already knew about the North American Discworld Convention, and who might've been planning to attend (and who could blame you?), no doubt that along with your concern for Terry's recently announced health situation came the question of whether all systems are still GO for the convention and Terry's participation thereat.

"I'd like to take this opportunity to tell you that I have heard from the person in charge of said convention who has the following on the highest authority, namely Mr. Pratchett himself: We are indeed GO for the convention and for Terry being there. He said so. Himself.

"Huzzah!"
