My Dad's family was Italian, my Mom's, mostly Irish, which made for a hot-tempered childhood. But I've found myself mellowing lately. I don't really understand why, and although it's much less stressful, occasionally I miss a really good knockdown, dragout, screaming match. (My husband most emphatically does not.)
I began the way so many writers do, by reading each and every written thing I could get my hands on. From stacks of comic books, (hundreds for a few dollars at tag sales!) to all kinds of tattered paperbacks. This led to Tolkien and Twain (hey, if you grow up in Connecticut, you have to read Twain), and an early high school romance led to SF, by way of Frank Herbert's Dune.
I wrote my first SF story (long-lost, thank heavens) in high school, but had no clue what to do with it once it was done. Yeah, I read Asimov's, and Science Fiction and Fantasy (which at the time was edited by Edward Ferman, and had an address of Cornwall, Connecticut-which was my hometown-you'd think I'd have a clue)
But it took two marriages and three children before I decided it was now or never, and I wrote my first novel. That was when I found out how little I knew about writing. I set myself to learning, and it's a never-ending process. Each and every piece I write teaches me something new. After all, who can truly say, "I know it all"?
