Fanfiction by Marina Frants & Keith R.A.
DeCandido
We're not really sure how it happened. One
moment, we were living our lives like normal science fiction geeks, the next
thing we know we've become utterly obsessed with Highlander: The Series,
Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Xena: Warrior Princess, and
Buffy the Vampire Slayer (as well as their spinoffs Highlander: The
Raven, Young Hercules, and Angel). We're not sure when it
really started, though one suspects a power that shows with colons in their
titles have over us (as evidenced by the fact that we're also fans of the late,
lamented Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Homicide: Life on the
Street). That doesn't explain Buffy, of course, but we're grasping at
straws here....
It led, as these things will do, to fanfic. Let this be a warning to all of
you.
Below are the various and sundry fanfic stories we've written in the milieu
of these assorted TV series, as well as the Harry Potter books. To further confuse the issue, several stories take
place in both the Highlander and the Hercules/Xena
universes. Some of our stuff has even won awards...
Keith & Marina have been interviewed! The fanfic webzine Voices has
interviews with Keith and Marina, where they
each talk about fanfic and other stuff. (Voices has also
included three of our Highlander stories.)

A series of
stories following the life of Methos, the oldest living Immortal, and the lives
he touched in his travels. By a startling coinky-dink, two of those lives are
Iolaus and Xena.
NOTE: These stories are incompatible with the events of the fifth and sixth
seasons of Hercules and the fourth, fifth, and sixth seasons of
Xena -- indeed, most were written before those episodes aired -- and so
obviously take place in an alternate reality where all the episodes after
Herc's "Reunions" and Xena's "If the Shoe Fits" didn't happen.
Given how those episodes went, this isn't exactly a bad thing.
First Excerpt: "Protect and
Survive" by Keith
Iolaus learns, much to his surprise, that he is an Immortal -- and that
the warlords known as the Four Horsemen are Immortals, also...
Second Excerpt: "Red Right
Hand" by Marina
Methos wants out of the Horsemen -- but the opportunity to leave without
incurring Kronos's wrath doesn't present itself. At least not until the
Horsemen encounter Xena, the Warrior Princess, and a plan begins to
form...
Third
Excerpt: "Cold Wind to Valhalla" by Keith
Iolaus re-encounters Methos in Rome in 35 BCE -- and then the pair of them
are given the chance to be reunited with Hercules, whom Iolaus hasn't seen in
centuries. Also featuring Marcus Constantine (from the HL episode "Pharaoh's
Daughter").
First
Iolaus Sidebar: "Life and Death" by Keith
Iolaus returns to Greece for the first time in decades in order to be at
Gabrielle's deathbed -- and encounters a red-headed Immortal woman named
Rebecca (from the HL episodes "Legacy" and "Methuselah's Gift")
among the Amazons.
Second Iolaus Sidebar: "Old
Hunter's Tricks" by Marina
Following the events of the HL episode "The
Messenger," Richie Ryan has started travelling. He encounters an Immortal
named Joel Hunter -- who used to call himself Iolaus -- and both of them are
targeted by a group of renegade Watchers.
Fourth Excerpt: "Occasional
Demons" Chapters 1-3 by Keith
The beginning of the latest chronicle. Richie brings his new friend "Joel
Hunter" back home to be reunited with "Adam Pierson," and to meet Duncan
MacLeod and Joe Dawson. The reunion is a fun one at first. But the breaking of
a thousand-year-old promise may have devastating consequences for both Iolaus
and Methos. Also featuring Kronos (the HL episodes "Comes a Horseman"
and "Revelation 6.9") and Amanda.
(Note from Keith: Due to popular demand, the first three chapters
have been posted. There are still two more chapters (or so) to be written. I
have no idea what the timetable is for completing it, but this should whet
your appetites, at least.)

"Another Peaceful
War" by Marina
Following his debriefing after "Restless" -- the fourth-season finale of
Buffy -- Riley Finn tries to work through the trauma of the collapse of
the Initiative by going home to his family in Iowa -- only to find that he
truly can't go home again...
"Favor" by Marina
Riley's thoughts after the events of "Goodbye, Iowa."
"The Geekado" by
Marina
A two-act parody of The Mikado featuring the Buffy
cast.
"Entangled" by
Marina
Set in the fourth season, between the episodes "Who Are You" and "Where
the Wild Things Are." In the aftermath of a demon attack, the hostility
between Buffy and Forrest endangers Riley's life.
"Some Enchanted
Evening" by Marina
Set in the fourth season, between the episodes "A New Man" and "The I in
Team." It's Valentine's Day, and Riley has the perfect romantic evening
planned. Murphy's Law kicks in with a vengeance.
"Hazy Shade of Winter"
by Marina
Who was Maggie Walsh, and what made her tick? Part 1 | Part 2 | Part 3 | Part 4

Harry Potter and the Polka Dot Plague by Marina
Harry Potter discovers why polka dots are evil. Severus Snape discovers why it's a bad idea to forge your medical records. Lucius Malfoy discovers why you shouldn't give suprise gifts to your boss.
A Small Truce by Marina
Severus Snape threatens an owl, faces a moral quandary, and talks to a wall.
Fall on Me by Marina
After fourteen years apart, how well does Remus still know Sirius? And how well does Sirius know himself?

By Marina
London, 1981. Rupert Giles and Ethan Rayne thought they understood magic until the night they saw the Dark Mark floating above a quiet suburban street. Now they're caught up in a civil war in a world they never knew existed. But can their Muggle magic really win the war? And for which side? (Most of this story was written before Order of the Phoenix was released, so some of the backstory details don't fit, but for the most part it's as canonical to both universes as I could possibly make it.)

Epilogue

"The Sword and the
Serpent" by Marina
Marina's Ares-centric idea (but also featuring Xena, Iolaus, Gabrielle,
and Hercules) for how the Dahak storyline that ran through both Herc
and Xena should have ended. (Obviously, this story was superseded by
the Xena two-part episode "Sacrifice" and subsequent episodes of both
shows, particularly the fifth season of Herc, but we don't
care.)
"Serpent's
Shadow" by Marina
The sequel to "The
Sword and the Serpent," as Ares recovers from his brutal injuries at the
hands of Dahak and tries to go back to his normal life as the god of war.
Unfortunately, it's a bit difficult to go back to business as usual. (Also
featuring Iolaus, Xena, and Gabrielle.)
"Imaginary Friend" by
Marina
A tale of Hercules's half-brothers, as a seven-year-old Iphicles
encounters Ares, and the boy and the god of war form a surprising (to Ares
as much as anyone) friendship.
"The Unforgiving
Minute" by Marina
A meeting between the young King Jason of Corinth and the young
Iphicles.

"Journeyman" by
Marina
A story of Richie Ryan during the time he spent away from Duncan MacLeod
shortly after beheading the Immortal Mako in the second season (between the
episodes "Under
Color of Authority" and "Prodigal
Son").
"Moments
of Weakness" by Marina
A story of Richie Ryan throughout the 21st century, as his marriage to a
mortal woman is chronicled. (Obviously, this story takes place in an
alternate reality where Richie wasn't senselessly killed in a stupid
story, as happened in "Archangel.")
"Kid Fears" by
Marina
An epilogue to the first season's "Free Fall"
because Marina thought that episode ended too quickly and left a lot of
things unresolved.
"Two Minutes After
Midnight" by Keith
"Gifts" by Marina
The story of Richie's first Christmas after he started living with
Duncan and Tessa Noel.

Awards we've won
Two of Keith's
stories have won Golden Apple Awards from The Iolausian Library, a fairly
large archive of Iolaus-centric fanfic. "Cold Wind to
Valhalla" was one of the winners of "Outstanding Crossover Story," and "Protect and Survive"
received an honorable mention in the same category.
MelanieCat, aka "The Empress," has given us a
"Talented Bard" award for our fanfic -- not just Marina's two Ares stories, "The Sword and the
Serpent" and "Serpent's Shadow" (the
Empress is a big Ares fan), but also for "The Methos
Chronicles." We are, to say the least, flattered, and thank her royal
highness from the bottom of our quill pens. (Click on the picture to check out
the Empress's site, a worthy place for any Ares fan to go in any case.)
Marina's "Another Peaceful War"
was a runner-up for Best Portrayal of Riley in the FINNatics Stake Awards It also won the Winter 2002 Halo Award for Best Characterization (Riley).
