Random Facts About Me

My Name Really is Hilary Moon Murphy!

It even says so on my driver's license.

Birthdate

July 19th, 1966

Relationships

Divorced once, married twice. My second husband, Andy, is definitely a keeper. Have three furry children (all cats) who are feeling miserably displaced by our (non-furry) son and daughter. Check out the photographs! In addition to my family, I have many friends, both online and in the flesh.

Education

  • Mistress of Library Science
  • Undergrad Majors in Psychology & South Asian Studies
  • In high school, I was voted "most likely to found a cult."

  • Administrator of Meetup.com's Message Boards

Home

Minneapolis, Minnesota

Other places I have lived for a year or more

  • San Francisco, California
  • London, England
  • Freeport, Bahamas
  • Northfield, Minnesota
  • Iowa City, Iowa
  • Pune, India

Hobbies

  • Cooking
  • Home maintenance (but only because Andy forces me!)
  • Bicycling
  • Dancing
  • Chess & card games (I own fifty chess sets, most of them antiques, collected from the far corners of the world.)
  • Tarot reading
  • Unicycling
  • Personal finance
  • Wasting time on online forums like the Speculations Rumormill.
  • Organizer of the Twin Cities SF Writer Meetup (It's fun! Join us!)

Journal

I used to keep an online journal, but the effort of maintaining it took too much time and energy from my fiction writing. The curious are free to look at the journal's archives, which are still on this site.

Quirks

  • Profoundly religious, but without a trace of evangelism. My personal flavor of religion is the Society of Friends, otherwise known as Quakers. As a corollary to my faith, I've been a vegetarian for sixteen years.
  • Gregarious chatterbox and outrageous flirt. I have been told my extroversion scores are off the charts. I'm quite capable of having long, heartfelt conversations with people I just met on the bus.
  • Research junkie. I have this compulsion to seek out the answers to fugitive facts and stumpers, and am an enormous fan of Cecil Adams' The Straight Dope.

Publication Credits

I have publication credits! Check out the (alas, still far too slim) bibliography.

Writing Speed

Glacial. I had hoped that Clarion would help with this, but it didn't.

(For more information on the Clarion Workshops, see Clarion Ex Machina.)

Miscellaneous

My elephant-headed muse, Ganpati-Baba, haunts me when I don't get my writing done and leaves crumbs all over my bed.
