MY FAVORITE FANTASY NOVELS
|
|
This is a list of my own favorite fantasy novels.
Some are still in print, some must be found through the inter-library loan program at your local library, or through used book dealers such as abebooks.com. All are worth reading. |
|
The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien: An obvious
choice, but it is the book that first introduced the fantasy genre to my teen-age mind, and is still perhaps the best book of its kind ever written.
Red Moon, Black Mountain, and The Gray Mane of
Morning by Joy Chant: Another English writer. Read these books in any order, but by all means read them. Stylistically, they are both quite different. I consider Red Moon to be an absolute masterpiece.
The Face in the Frost by John Bellairs: Another
lovely work, though long out of print. It has suspense, humor, and great characterization. Though probably written for children, it is an even better book for adults.
Titus Groan, and Gormenghast by Mervyn Peake:
This book contains no magic and is considered a
fantasy only because of the fantastic characters peopling the great castle Gormenghast. Be warned: Peake was a master of word descriptions and in no hurry to tell his story, so this is a dense book. But it is unforgettable. |
