It is now the year 3050 and the worlds population is now 30 Billion people. Most people now live in tall apartment buildings. These apartment buildings seem to be getting so high that they look like they are taller than the clouds. These apartments are getting so high that some people don't ever see the original streets on the ground level. There is really no reason why people need or have to go down on the streets because of the immense streets going from one apartment building to the next like spider webs. There is no real need to go down for food either because there are grocery stores everywhere not to mention you can get just about anything by mail using the much more advanced super internet just like on the ground level.
The worlds land is now 85% tall buildings, there are no civilizations yet on or in the water but you can bet that right now people are looking into. The world used to be a beautiful place but it is now riddled with buildings. There is now less than .0001%of the worlds rain forests left but the only reason they are left is because the worlds government protects them with there life.
My name is Jerry and it was the day I turned 18, and that means that day was the day that I will get my apartment served to me. Now a days the government tries to manage everything so when you turn 18 they put you in a random apartment. They don't even give you a choice of who or where you will live. If you get lucky they will place you in an apartment closer to the bottom levels though cause then you don't have to go very far to see the weather and what not. Not to mention the apartments are getting so high up in the air now that if you go outside you are libel to get a bloody nose or a disease because of the massive amounts of diseases that float around in the higher elevation now.
It was near time to go to the apartment placement center when my mom said "BREAKFASTS READY!!" I knew she was really sad because whenever she is sad she tries to act normal like nothing is going on." I knew my mom was going to try and not be emotional but I also knew that if I didn't want her to be sad I'd better eat everything she gave me and definetely say that everything was the best food I had ever had. So when I was done I said "that was great mom!" "thank you" she replied "I Know you will need all of your energy for the big move." Get in the hover car" mom said. All the way to the placement center I paid particular attention to the massiveness of the building that took up the whole Grand Valley and the top of the mesa.
The hollow feeling inside me I just couldn't ignore I kept on thinking I can always visit my mom, but then I thought I could get my placement just about anywhere and what if they put me in an apartment in a whole other area like the previous Mexico or something like that. I kept on wondering who I was going to be placed with and where would they be from. I knew they would all be single because if you were married or had a kid they put you in a separate kind of apartment called family place apartments.
We were nearly there and my mom said "you know wherever they put you, you are going to come and visit."is said"yeah I know mom" it was now getting kind of weepy in the car my mom now had a tear going down her face making a glich in her internet make-up she had picked on the internet for this day. My mom loved to shop and she loved me so for this day she bought just about everything she could cause she had said it was a special occasion and she had to look good for it, which I knew she wanted to look good but it was just an excuse.
We were now there and I all I could think was how much I was going to miss mom, but I figured if this was the way it had to be, this was the way it had to be. This was not my first time to the placement center, I had come here when my brother Jake had been moved out. The building was really bland there was a white door on the pure white building, whoever made the building must have been really color cordinated but not very original cause everything was white. The building smelled like a hospital, just like the color of the building there were no original or out of place smells in here.
I knew the routine in the place the gave you a number along with about 50 or 60 other people going for apartments and they would draw one number out of a box at a time for the individual apartments. There was one hitch though there was almost always one less apartment then there were people. So those that didn't get an apartment were just not very lucky I guesse. Those who did not get apartments were called drifters. Drifters were a subculture of bums basically.
My mom said "they are about to draw the first number." not mine I thought I was kind of happy I guesse I was just kind not wanting to be called on first. The next ten number were not even close they were at least ten away from mine. The next number though was 7 which was only 2 away from my number 9. They kept on going through the number twenty of them went by without mine. Another 10 went by, there was now me and about ten other kids awaiting. One after another they went by. My mom was starting to get worried. I kept on thinking I will be picked next but it never happened.
Then I am telling you that is how I became a drifter, that is a story that nobody wants there name on. But that is my story and it is a story I must live with all of my life. I still vistit my mom if I can. But the life of a drifter is a hard one.
