Writing a Science Fiction Story

For some students, getting an assignment to write a science fiction story is like giving a kid candy. Stand out of the way! These students have been just waiting for an opportunity.

The others benefit from guidance. They may not be sure what to write about or how to go about telling a story. The handouts take them through the process.

The key component to success in this project is the research. If a student dives blindly into the story, there's a good chance the final product will be derivative and boring. If you ask the student to learn more about the topic of the story, the final story will benefit. Insist on the research!

The information here is presented in the order the teacher would deliver it: The Assignment, Ideas for Stories, the Peer Editing Guideline and The Grading Rubric.

There are numerous Internet resources specifically geared toward new science fiction writers. See the Resource Page.

Good luck.
