Maureen F. McHugh: 9/29/96

This story, written with a firm grasp of not only the historical situation but a convincing sense of what it was like to live at that time, is the best written in this collection. Despite the science fictional conceit of its ending (which I won't spoil) it completely avoids the usual downfall of making its protagonist sympathetic to twentieth century judgements and attitudes. Alternate history (a category that could be stretched to include "The Weighing of Ayre") is chock full of people who are twentieth century liberals in historic costume. This story is not. In addition, the prose is elegantly crafted.

This is writing far and above the usual level. It's not an easy read, but it is a rewarding one.
