Mark Stackpole: 2/5/97
Space opera with a straight face. The best part of the story is not the plot (magic artworks with unsuspected powers), but how Zahn subversively overturns several common assumptions about the human galactic empire future. For instance, organized religion (Catholicism at that) is still a driving force, humans living under an alien government are perfectly content and those aliens have more on the ball than us humans do.
