Rich Horton: 3/5/97

I haven't read the March short fiction yet, but I would like to mention an excellent article by Brian Stableford, part 8 of his "Creators of SF" series, which Interzone has been publishing. This concerns James Blish, a favorite writer of mine, and Stableford is very interesting on Blish's ambitions, and on his habit of reworking and expanding upon themes in early stories. His views of the process of writing The Seedling Stars, Cities in Flight, and the "After Such Knowledge" trilogy are very interesting. The general picture Stableford gives of how the conflict between Blish's literary ambitions, commercial necessities, and also publishing customs (then and now) shaped Blish's career is also interesting. I would have liked to see more discussion of some of the significant short work, as well as the interesting if flawed novel VOR, but no doubt space did not allow.
