CALLIHOO Newsletter ----------------------------------------------------------------- Vol. 6 No. 33 Editor: Julia West January 12, 1999 ----------------------------------------------------------------- Web page: http://www.sff.net/people/julia.west/CALLIHOO/index.htm ----------------------------------------------------------------- NEWS Reminder to all CALLIHOOligans: The US postage rates just went up and down. First class, first ounce, went from 32 cents to 33 cents. But SECOND ounce went from 23 cents to 22 cents! So if you send off a manuscript that's more than two ounces, it will cost pennies LESS than it did last week! * * * Last week we decided to add the uptown library as one of our spots to meet occasionally for CALLIHOO. Since it closes at 9:00, it will be especially important be on time and keep chatter to a minimum on those nights. We'll also schedule only one manuscript to critique on those nights. [http://www.dragonsoup.com/writing.html] MARKET GUIDELINES =Dragon Soup= [Webzine and themed printzine, SF/F 1000 to 5000 wds, pays 1/2 cent/wd. (min $5), E-mail subm. okay.] Editor: June Dragon E-mail: submit@dragonsoup.com FICTION: =Dragon Soup= accepts submissions from all walks of life. We especially like working with new and amateur authors. All submissions will receive feedback and (kind-hearted) criticism. We accept short stories in the science fiction and fantasy genres. This includes everything these genres encompass, from cyber-punk to urban fantasy. Right now we are starting a new horror section, this will feature one to two stories a month. Preferred lengths for all fiction is 1000 to 5000 words, however works longer and shorter than this will be considered. Please query, if your story is over 5000 words. Stories should be pasted in the body of the email and should have your name, pen name, word count, genre, and return email in the introduction. Please do not add carriage returns to the end of each line in your email. (I have to remove them). A short introduction in the form of a byline is nice, although not required. I do not usually like receiving attachments, as they take longer for me to get to. Payment is half a cent per word, minimum five dollars, and a maximum twenty five. =Dragon Soup='s response time is usually within a month, unless I am extremely busy with school and work. DRAGON SOUP PRINTED: Guidelines for the printed issue are pretty much the same, except that some stories will be centered around a theme. Not all the stories in the magazine will be theme oriented, and everything that is submitted is considered for both the print and online versions. Contest submissions will only be considered for the print issue. The current contests can be found at =Dragon Soup='s writing contests. The first and second place winner will receive more money than if they had submitted their work as general fiction. Payment for =Dragon Soup Printed= is half a cent per word, plus a contributor's copy. POETRY: Contemporary poetry can and should be submitted to =Penelope's Loom=, which is a separate forum from =Dragon Soup= that leans toward literary poetry. A submissions guideline will be posted there shortly. Poetry for =Dragon Soup= does not receive any payment unless it is submitted for the theme contests. =Dragon Soup= is always looking for good science fiction and fantasy poetry, which is really hard to come by, in my opinion. ART: If you are an artist and would like to display some of your work on =Dragon Soup= then please feel free to email some sample copies. I am very interested in displaying an artist's work in a friendly environment. I cannot offer any payment, but I can offer links to your site and exposure of your work. BOOK REVIEWS: There is no payment for book reviews, however any book review will be posted after it is edited. Please include the title of the book reviewed, the ISBN number, publisher, and author, besides your own specs. All submissions can be emailed to me, June Dragon, at: submit@dragonsoup.com [http://www.dragonsoup.com/guidelines.html] MARKET INFORMATION =2 AM Magazine= A writer on sff.net just received a form letter from =2AM Magazine= stating that it is "suspending publication in its present format." The letter also said that all manuscripts would be returned. [sff.writing.response-times 24 Dec 98] =Crank!= A writer on sff.net got the following letter from Bryan Cholfin, editor of =Crank!= "Dear Writer, "No rejection! Yay! Why? I'm no longer reading for =Crank!=. =Crank!= is now officially =closed=. The web site will remain active for a while, as I still have unventory to sell off, including =The Best of Crank!=, but no new subscriptions will be entered at this time. Sincerely, Bryan Cholfin" [sff.writing.response-times, 10 Jan 99] The magazine's website says: "UPDATE: JANUARY 9,1998 (sic) CRANK! CLOSES "After a bit of soul-and pocket-searching, I've decided to suspend the publication of =Crank!=. I kept it going this long by pulling rabbits out of hats each time =Crank!= ran into trouble, but, folks, there are no more rabbits. I'll [be] posting some of the story here, and a letter with more detail is going to go to subscribers. This means I won't be entering any new subscriptions after this date. This site will remain for a while, and orders will be filled for existing inventory only while supplies last." [http://home.earthlink.net/~cranked/] =Odyssey= Editor Liz Holliday of the British magazine =Odyssey=, concerned over the huge boxes of slush (and the really slow response times) vowed over the new year to go through =every single manuscript= she had. She says, "I haven't counted how many manuscripts there are, but there are three large, full boxes, plus two with a small number in each. One of these holds ms I need to think about for a while; the other holds stories from people I know, have bought from before, or otherwise have expectations of. "One word of warning: I'm intending to do this =fast= so I'm mostly sending out form rejects. They mean =nothing= other than that I'm finally trying to sort this out, so please don't anyone be offended. Although I'm now working on very old subs, I'm not actually deliberately doing them in any particular order, so some response time stats may be heavily skewed."
