No sim subs, E-mail subm, reprints.] Altair Publishing strives to deliver high quality fiction from all parts and people around the world. =Altair= fiction endeavours to capture the cultural aspects of the author's country. We will not edit down work to fit traditional English speaking cultures but highlight the differences and educate the reader in new and exciting experiences. There are no borders or boundaries with =Altair= magazine, only the best Speculative Fiction we can buy from the best new and established writers in the world today, collected in a high quality 156 page perfect bound journal. Contact: Altair Publishing, PO Box 475, Blackwood, SA 5051, Australia email:altair@senet.com.au (queries only) URL: http://www.sfsite.com/altair/ General Submission Guidelines Story length between 2,000 and 10,000 words. No simultaneous submissions. No Email submissions. No reprints. Note: Please use a readable font. (eg. 12 pt Courier) Altair Publishing will accept manuscripts printed on used paper (ie paper that has already been used on one side). Manuscripts must come with SSAE with either: 1 IRC (or US$1) for business envelope return, or 4 IRCs (or US$5) for manuscript return. E-mail responses available (No SSAE required: Save money! Save trees!) Payment Rate: 3 cents/word (max. $250) No art submissions: Email us with your web address if you want, but please don't send us anything through the post. What we are looking for: The editors are not in the business of stifling talent or ideas so as a standard rule we will read anything sent to us of a speculative nature. =Altair= is primarily looking for Science Fiction or Fantasy based stories with a blending of the two genres being especially welcome. Literary works will also be considered, (be warned though, we consider too many symbolic references can weaken a good story). Space Opera and Sword and Sorcery type stories will be read, but try to make them original. We look for stories that are driven by both the storyline and the characters. If you are going to use high tech jargon or ancient rhetoric, make sure it is integral to the story and the characters. Think about your characters, consider the plot carefully and, above all, be sure it is a story that you are sending us! Good writing to you all. [http://www.sfsite.com/altair/guide/guide.htm] =TransVersions= [Canadian print mag, SF/F/H to 10,000 wds (prefer to 6,000), pays 2 centsC/wd. No E-mail subm, reprints and sim subs grudgingly perused.] Authors' Guidelines Send fiction and art to: 216 Woodfield Road, Toronto, Ontario - M4L 2W7 Send poetry to: #706-19 Lower Village Gate, Toronto, Ontario - M5P 3L9 New URL http://www.salmar.com/transversions/ 103124.356@compuserve.com (queries only) Every time the magazine begins to assert its identity, we accept a story that falls totally outside of all our preconceptions of what =TransVersions= is all about. But when it comes down to it, unpredictability IS what the magazine is about. We like to entertain our readers, by startling them, disturbing them, making them laugh or smile or cry. We see too many hitchhiker horror stories and stories which suspend the protagonist in a void/dream/metaphor, without making the character strong or three dimensional enough to care about. This creates a void within a void; which works something like a vacuum cleaner (ie: it generally sucks). A story's resonance is very important to us. We want stories that are great the first time we read them and even better the second time. We don't like sex and violence for their own sake but if it's integral to the story, we have bought and will continue to buy stories which deal with these subjects quite explicitly. As long as your story or poem contains at least a glimpse or a hint of the fantastic -- be it science fiction, fantasy, horror, suspense, surrealism, magic realism or the ever-growing "unclassifiable" - it stands a chance of acceptance at =TransVersions=. Here are a couple of things that usually fail to impress us: * US postage attached to an SASE. We cannot mail something from Canada unless it bears a CANADIAN stamp. PLEASE, if you are submitting from the US, do NOT attach American stamps to your SASE. Ask your post office for an IRC (International Reply Coupon) OR ask a Canadian friend to buy you some stamps OR send US cash or LOOSE AMERICAN stamps. Postage from Canada is as follows: 56 cents for a business sized envelope to the US; $1.45 for a large envelope containing a story of 9 pages or less; $3.15 for a large envelope with a ms of 10 pages or more ($2 US cash will cover this). That said, send only disposable manuscripts (See the section on disposable manuscripts for details.) If you do not send adequate postage, we cannot afford to pay for it out of our own pocket, though we will usually pay for one 56 cent stamp to send your response and forward these guidelines, we won't do it a second time with the same writer or artist. * Poor spelling and grammar - unless it's intentional and you feel it's necessary to the story. It demonstrates lack of care on the part of the writer. If you don't care about your story, why should we? Please send 'disposable manuscripts'. You can save yourself a small fortune by simply including a number 10 SASE for comments (or purchase offer!) and marking the manuscript 'disposable'. You will find that most editors prefer it this way. We'd rather not go into the post office to weigh, mail out, and occasionally find out that the included postage does not cover the cost of twenty printed pages. Please, send disposable manuscripts only. We prefer standard manuscript format: submissions should be typed, double-spaced, printed in an easy-to-read font on one side of the page, and paper clipped rather than stapled. Leave 1 inch margins all around. The author's last name or initials along with the story title (or key words) and page number should appear at the top (bottom is fine) of every page. The first page of each story should contain the author's name, address, telephone number, and e-mail address if you have one. The word count should appear at or near the top of the first page. Somewhere halfway down that first page is also where the story begins. A separate cover page, blank except for the title and byline, is not necessary. We'd rather not look at electronic submissions, but WOULD like to know if the story is available on disk - IBM format - almost any file type. MAC disks are better than nothing. We're not likely to accept reprints with previous North American publication credits but will grudgingly look at them. We don't like simultaneous submissions but will look at them. Please, be professional and clearly mark them as such; at least then we won't be too upset if we want to buy something that turns out to be already sold. We will pay $.02 a word (Canadian) for short stories to 10,000 words (payment for longer stories to be negotiated with the sale). 25 cents a line for poems ($5 min). We purchase First North American Serial Rights. Regarding story length - keep in mind that while we do publish the occasional longer piece (like that 10,000 word story mentioned in the payments paragraph above), we are much more likely to accept stories that are 6000 words or less. An average issue of =TransVersions= is roughly 26,000 words. What that means is that there is very little room for 10,000 word (or longer) stories. ART Payment - No covers currently needed. Full page interiors - 10 dollars, spot illos 5 dollars. We WILL consider artwork reprints if clearly marked as such. If we're interested in the piece, we'll ask for details.
