Cedar Bluff Road Suite #345 Knoxville, TN 37923 deadboltmagazine@hotmail.com =Deadbolt= is always open to submissions. We're looking for character driven stories with a dark element. Ideally, we'd like to see stories reminiscent of those in King's =Night Shift= or McCammon's =Blue World=. Give us believable characters confronted by dark forces. Not very enthusiastic about overworked themes, especially vampires. Also not impressed by excessive gore unless it enhances the story in some way. (This is not a squeamish magazine, however. We're just not interested in gore for gore's sake.) I highly recommend that you purchase a sample issue to get an idea of what the magazine is all about. A sample issue won't set you back much and if nothing else, you'll end up with a great magazine with some high-caliber dark fiction. 3500-4000 words max. Pays 1/4 cent per word plus 1 copy for First Rights. Must submit via snail mail. (Not accepting e-mail submissions at this time.) Must include SASE and be in a professional format. Please include a coversheet with quick bio and e-mail address if available. Please allow 4 - 6 weeks for a response. We've got our thumbs out, folks; take us on a dark, thrilling ride. No E-mail subm.] Edward L. Ferman, Publisher Gordon Van Gelder, Editor Editorial address: PO Box 1806, Madison Square Station, New York, NY 10159-1806. fsfmag@fsfmag.com Writer's Guidelines We have no formula for fiction. We are looking for stories that will appeal to science fiction and fantasy readers. The SF element may be slight, but it should be present. We prefer character-oriented stories. We receive a lot of fantasy fiction, but never enough science fiction or humor. Do not query for fiction; send the entire manuscript. We publish fiction up to 25,000 words in length. Please read the magazine before submitting. A sample copy is available for $5 (to CT address below). We do not accept simultaneous or electronic submissions. Please type your manuscript on clean white bond, double spaced, with one inch margins. Put your name on each page, and enclose a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Manuscripts received without return postage will be discarded. Allow 8 weeks for a response. Please write and enclose a self-addressed stamped envelope if you have any questions. Payment is 5-8 cents per word on acceptance. We buy first North American and foreign serial rights and an option on anthology rights. All other rights are retained by the author. Our columns and non-fiction articles are assigned in house. We do not accept freelance submissions in those areas. Send editorial submissions to Gordon Van Gelder, PO Box 1806, Madison Square Station, New York, NY 10159-1806. Cartoon and art queries as well as orders for sample copies should be sent to Ed Ferman, 143 Cream Hill, West Cornwall, CT 06796. [http://www.sfsite.com/fsf/glines.htm] =The Orphic Chronicle= [Quarterly webzine, SF/F/H, $5.00 minimum or 1/4 cent per word, reading betw. 1 Nov and Dec 31, E-mail subm okay, no sim subs, mult subs okay] Kay Elmore, editor P.O. Box 171202, Arlington, TX 76003-1202 editor@orphic-chronicle.com We are reading for the Spring 1999 Issue of The Orphic Chronicle from November 1 through December 31st. Because of the large number of submissions we receive, any submissions received after Dec. 31st cannot be read and will be returned. Poery in the Speculative/Fantasy and Horror genre is particularly needed! Please read the guidelines carefully! If you submit a fiction or poetry piece that does not follow these guidelines, your work will be reurned and you'll be asked to re-submit. Specifically, DO NOT send email attachments -- send your files as text included in the body of an email or by snail mail. You need not be well-known or even previously published to be taken seriously here. We accept stories based on the merit of the piece rather than the author. We also hold a firm conviction that electronic publishing is just as valid and important as print publishing. We buy either First Worldwide Electronic Rights or One-Time rights to your work. Our #1 priority is making internet-based fiction as acceptable -- both as quality entertainment and as a legitimate creative pursuit -- as our print cousins. Towards that end, we offer a small payment for publication. In the future, as revenues increase, we hope to increase the pay rates accordingly. We accept science fiction, fantasy, horror, occultic, surrealistic and experimental fiction and poetry, but don't be put off by stereotypes. If you're not sure how to cubbyhole your work, send it anyway. I'm looking for stories that have a strong sense of the unreal. Show me the side of your imagination that's been to hell and back, where strange events are common and things that have been hidden are revealed in every ugly detail. No vampires, no fan fiction, no typical serial killers -- they've been done to death. I do appreciate fiction that has one foot in role-playing games (cyberpunk, high fantasy, apocalyptic tales) but don't send a written version of your latest RPG campaign. If you include gore, sexuality, and brutality please make them integral to the work, not simply added in for effect. Chill me. Make me turn on the lights. Tell me a wistful tale about human folly that leaves an aftertaste of roses. Wry, bleak humor is also appreciated. We no longer accept simultaneous submissions, however multiple submissions are fine. Send multiple submissions in separate e-mail messages or envelopes, with the exception of poetry, which may be grouped in one message. Reprints are accepted on a limited basis -- send your very best. There is no limit on word count. Micro-shorts are welcome, and longer pieces can be serialized. Submissions can be sent to: editor@orphic-chronicle.com with SUBMISSION in the subject heading. Please include your submission as text included in the body of your email. Do not send file attachments. Also send a one-paragraph bio, your mailing address, web page and email address. I will accept a web or ftp address where your work can be downloaded. (Note: please send a biography, not an advertisement for your current projects. If you need publicity, we offer dirt-cheap sponsorship rates!) You can also snail mail manuscripts to: The Orphic Chronicle, c/o Kay Elmore, P.O. Box 171202, Arlington, TX 76003-1202 =The Orphic Chronicle= is published quarterly. The 1998 issues will be published in February, May, August, and November at http://www.orphic-chronicle.com/ Expect a four to six-week response time. Current pay rates: Fiction: $5.00 minimum or 1/4 cent per word for First Worldwide Electronic Rights -- whichever is the greater sum. 1/8 cent per word for one-time rights or reprints, no minimum is offered Poetry: $5.00 First Rights, $2.50 for one-time rights (per poem) Nonfiction: Please Query First. Pays Same as Fiction rates. Artwork: Varies, usually $5.00. Archiving: We do not archive fiction or poetry past its initial publication issue. Some works are selected for our "Best Of" section through an arrangement with the author who retains all rights to the work.
