CALLIHOO Newsletter ----------------------------------------------------------------- Vol. 7 No. 8 Editor: Julia West July 13, 1999 ----------------------------------------------------------------- Web page: http://www.sff.net/people/julia.west/CALLIHOO/index.htm ----------------------------------------------------------------- NEWS The next mini-retreat will be Friday July 30 - Saturday July 31 at Gerry Carpenter's house in Tooele. He'll have floor space for anyone who wants to sleep overnight, and promises to feed us all breakfast! As usual, it will start noonish on Friday. Come when you can, bring your computer, notebook, or whatever, and WRITE, WRITE, WRITE! Also bring food and whatever you want to drink. If you're staying over, a sleeping bag will probably be a good idea. If you haven't finished your quarterly challenge story (time travel), it's due August 1st, so the retreat might be a good time to work on it. . . . The next challenge, due Halloween, is (of course) a scary story. DEADLINES Check out the CALLIHOO website, listed above, for more information on these contests, magazine issues, and anthologies. [Writer's Network, July 99] UPDATE YAHOO! placated users of its Geocities service yesterday [7 July 99] with a second revision of its terms of service (http:// docs.yahoo.com/info/terms/geoterms.html). Yahoo! had been criticized for "stealing" customers' intellectual property rights. The revision, which directly incorporated irate users' demands, prompted the end of a GeoCities boycott (http:// come.to/boycottyahoo) and received favorable comments from Net rights experts including the Electronic Frontier Foundation. Yahoo! maintained that it never intended to grab users' content; that the terms had originally applied to Yahoo!'s search-engine and portal service, but after the purchase of GeoCities -- where millions of users maintain free Web pages -- the terms were extended to cover GeoCities as well. The agreement included language that seemed to grant Yahoo! a license to reproduce content posted on any GeoCities site. Yahoo! later revised the agreement, but the new language still appeared vague to many users. The company then created a separate TOS agreement for GeoCities. Boycotters had asked for a number of issues to be addressed, including a definite cessation of the rights they are granted when leaving the service, the ability to leave before agreeing to any new TOS change made regarding content and how it is used, and the clear limitation of the use of content solely for its display on the service on which content was stored. They felt their concerns were addressed "in a clear, positive and concise manner." [DarkEcho, 8 July 99]
