CALLIHOO Newsletter ----------------------------------------------------------------- Vol. 7 No. 28 Editor: Julia West December 28, 1999 ----------------------------------------------------------------- Web page: http://www.sff.net/people/julia.west/CALLIHOO/index.htm ----------------------------------------------------------------- MAY 2000 BE YOUR BEST YEAR YET! ----------------------------------------------------------------- NEWS Start planning now for the February Dare To Be Bad Challenge. What's DTBB? It's a time when a writer can let the free-spirited "right brain" have its rein, and write without fear that the more practical "left brain" will laugh at it. It's the time when the creative side of a writer comes to the forefront, pushing the editor side back beyond the sidelines. How do we do this? By writing three stories in six days. In that short a space, there's no time to edit or worry about the writing. Just let it flow onto the notepad or the computer screen. When one story is finished, begin the next. When that one's done, start the third one. These "bad" brainchildren may be just that--but they could be surprisingly good. Over the years, many writers have sold their DTBB stories (with a little rewrite, of course) to such magazines as =Analog and =Fantasy and Science Fiction=. Any other rules? Well yes, a few. Although you can have ideas or outlines ready beforehand, you shouldn't start writing the stories themselves until the challenge begins. If you're writing a novel, you can count three new chapters instead. The important thing is that you write quickly and don't worry about what the story will be like. Just see what comes. The Challenge will be held February 16-21, 2000. I'll be reporting on how I do in my sff.net newsgroup, sff.people.julia- west. Several other people on sff.net, as well as members of CALLIHOO, are joining the challenge. We've set it over the Presidents' Day holiday so people who don't work then (or have vacation plans) will have a little extra time to write. Thanks to Nina Kiriki Hoffman and Dean Wesley Smith, whose idea this was (quite a few years ago), and Jo Clayton, who got me started in her GEnie topic. Come on, writers. Start planning now to Dare To Be Bad in February. DEADLINES Check out the CALLIHOO website, listed above, for more information on these contests, magazine issues, and anthologies. Our archive will be kept on disk and may be sold as back issues to individuals at a later date. However, we will not be keeping an online archive, in order to protect the rights of the authors and artists. We will consider previously published works, as long as these are not currently posted on the Internet, and the creator has clear copyright to the work. Please note: We do not accept simultaneous submissions! We are currently looking for submissions for our March, 2000 issue. All works of science fiction, fantasy, and horror will be considered. However, we are not interested in fiction depicting graphic sexual behavior or gratuitous violence.
