Box 0536 Bogart, GA 30622-0536 E-mail (subm): submit@genrezone.com E-mail (ed.): editor@genrezone.com =genrEZONE= is a quarterly publication (will be bi-monthly by 1/12/00) specializing in all aspects of genre fiction: Sci-Fi, fantasy, horror, mysteries, romance, western, erotica, suspense, paranormal, time-travel and any combinations or permutations thereof. Our only taboo is pornography, which we will not publish. Stories and artwork may be 'adult themed' and will be so designated on our site when material may not be suited to all readers/viewers--the equivalent of the motion picture industry's 'R' rating. Payment: 1/4 cent (US) per word to a maximum of $25 for a 10k word or longer novelette. Reprints okay from hard copy magazines. (Or from ezines by special arrangement with the editor--by invitation of the editor only.) Until further notice we are not reading previously published stories, so please do not submit stories that have appeared elsewhere at this time. Rights Purchased: First North American Electronic Rights or Second North American Serial Rights. Preferred length, fiction: 2500 - 5000 words. We are not reading anything over 8000 words at this time. This is a firm limit, so please do not submit novelettes or novellas in any genre. Articles: 200-5000 words. Payment $2 flat for reviews. Articles, commentary and interviews are paid at the same rate as stories, (1/4th cent .0025) per word to a maximum of $5. We are looking for commentary and articles of interest to fans of genre writing, and for articles about the craft of writing. Reprints okay, but state where work was previously published. Multiple submissions of poems and articles are encouraged. Multiple submissions of fiction are not. Fiction authors should submit only one piece at a time and wait until they have heard whether the work has been accepted or not before submitting again. For a list of our current needs, and to see what we are currently overstocked on, please visit our Hot List [http://genrezone. com/hotlist.html]. Please be sure to read the Editor's Note to see which themes we NEVER accept. [CALLIHOO editor's note: see below for June 1999 hotlist.] Important notes for ALL submissions The following are the generic guidelines which apply to all submissions. For more detailed guidelines pertaining to the genre of the work(s) you are planning to submit please look for specific guideline pages for the genre(s) in question. All submissions should be accompanied by a cover letter. Tell us about yourself, whether you have been published before and where, or if you've never been published. We love to publish new authors! Hard copy submissions should be typed or printed, double spaced, on white paper using BLACK INK only, and in a typeface no smaller than 12 pitch or point. I encourage submissions on used or recycled paper, i.e.: one side has already been used for another purpose. Please draw an X over the side that is NOT your story if you do this! Your name and title of story must appear on every page of the manuscript even if you write it by hand, so long as it is on every page. Please also include the word count (line count for poems) on first page of your manuscript. (Manuscript guides are available for a #10 SASE upon request. Or the manuscript guidelines page can be viewed at: http://www.genrezone.com/ msguide.html) Please allow 6 weeks for a reply as we receive a large volume of material each week. No simultaneous submissions of fiction or poetry please. You may simultaneously submit articles however, as we accept reprints of those. Stories/poetry/articles that are seasonal in nature (stories with a winter setting or that take place on the 4th of July for example) should be submitted 3-6 months in advance of the season/holiday in question to give us time to review all submissions and to set-up the issue. EDITOR'S NOTE-PLEASE READ CAREFULLY: =genrEZONE= will never accept any submission that revolves around any of the following themes: * Serial Killers * Rapists * Child Molestation * Insane People doing insane things because they are insane * Demonically possessed Psycho Killers * Possessed vehicles, dolls or toys of any kind. * Evil land or people-eating soil, highways or streets * Religious proselytization disguised as fiction or poetry * Nazi Torture / Concentration Camp Stories Vampire stories we've already seen and don't want to see again include: * Prostitutes who turn out to be vampires * People becoming vampires from the bite or blood of a vampire bat * Stories that consist solely of the vampire hunts, catches and eats its prey * Stories wherein a person chases a vampire begging, oh, please make me a vampire too * Vampire night clubs * My (insert loved one here) is a vampire and wants to make me one too * Tired vampires who want to die Westerns we don't want to see: * Evil bloodthirsty rampaging Native Americans attacking poor innocent white folks. Or anyone else for that matter. One of our editors is half Cherokee and will not be amused. All stories where any of these themes are the basis for your plot will be rejected via FORM LETTER! Do not send fan-fiction! This means no Star Trek--in any of its permutations--Star Wars, Babylon 5, Xena, Hercules, Buffy, or anything else from television shows or movies. Where to send your submissions: Submissions can be sent via email to: submit@genrezone.com 1) pasted into the body of the email for works under 5000 words OR 2) as an attached file in text only (ASCII or RTF formats) if over 5000 words. Be certain to include your REAL name--not just your email address--your complete snail mail address and the word count of the piece you are submitting. Material can also be sent as hard copy. Do not send disks as more often than not we are either unable to read them, or they arrive damaged. Hard copy submissions should be sent to: genrEZONE SUBMISSION DEPARTMENT P.O. Box 0536 Bogart, GA 30622-0536 Computer printout, photocopied and dot matrix (if dark) are all okay. Hard copy submissions must be accompanied by a #10 (business sized envelope) SASE for our reply. Even if you do not desire the return of your manuscript, we require a SASE for the purpose of sending rejections, acceptances/contracts. Postcards are NOT sufficient for reply as neither a contract nor a payment can be enclosed. Submissions arriving via snail-mail without a SASE will be discarded unread. What we would like to see: =genrEZONE= is looking for action-oriented themes. Our editorial bias is for active works rather than passive ones. Violence, sex and strong language have a place in the genre, but these themes should not be the entire focus of any submission. If your characters would realistically react or communicate in a certain way, let them do so. We are not easily offended. This does not mean that we want to see gross-out material written for shock-value alone; make certain that there is a solid reason for any 'shocking' content. Combat sequences need to be realistically executed and physically possible. Armor and weapons must also be feasible. We're real sticklers on both of these points and will catch any inconsistencies. However, the editing staff is willing to work with writers to correct any specific problems in these areas. =genrEZONE= is a very tough market, but we encourage you to submit your work. Never be afraid to send a submission to us, even if you aren't certain that it is appropriate to our needs. We'll try to help you in any way we can. As occasionally happens, we may simply request a revision in order to accept your work. Our standards are very high because we are trying to create the most professional quality electronic publication that we possibly can, while giving the writers and artists the best showcases for their work that we can create. We appreciate your interest, and look forward to seeing your work. Good luck in all your creative endeavors! Sincerely, Glenda Woodrum, Editor and the editorial staff at =genrEZONE= You may contact the editor directly via email at: editor@genrezone.com Please be advised: =genrEZONE= cannot take responsibility for materials lost or damaged in transit to or from our office by the postal service or other delivery services. We are also not responsible for returning or retaining manuscripts that are not accompanied by a SASE and sufficient postage for their return. If you cannot or choose not to send a SASE and postage, please be sure only to send disposable manuscripts. NEVER send your only copy of a manuscript to ANYONE! Always retain a copy.
